I was on my way to work yesterday, and a truck kicked up a rock that hit my windshild and caused it to break, so of course that had me pretty heated for the remainder of the day.
So my question is - are all the c5 windsields the same or, are the one's with HUD somehow different
because i have HUD and i just want to make sure when i go to get it replaced.

Hope you got the lic number and turn it in to the company, Yes a C5 windshield with HUD is different than a C5 without. Some have used a standard windshield with HUD, But you lose the clairty. Replace with the correct one.

Check your insurance policy. May be covered by "comprehensive" (no deductible).
This has happened to me twice and both incidents just caused small "repairable" nicks to the windshield in a windshield that is already shot. Both times I got the license number and a company name & phone number off the truck. I pull off the road immediately and call the company. This lets them know that I am on the same road and time frame that their truck is using. Both times I have been conpensated for repairs. Once I was even asked to sign a waiver and given extra compensation. I'm waiting for the day something big flys from a truck and breaks the windshield. I really neen a new one and at $500.......
I also have 2 Rock chips from trucks that kick up rocks and my glass guy told me that the non HUD windshileld don't have the special reflective coating on the windshield like the HUD windshields do.

In 2002 - Z06's and convertibles with HUD began using thinner 4.8mm windshields. Everything else got the standard 5.6mm windshield, though I doubt that you'd be able to find the thicker 5.6mm glass now that the C5 is out of production.
HUD glass does have a different coating above the projector, but I have heard of people that added HUD aftermarket and didn't change the glass say that it works just fine without the special windshield.

A windshield for a head-up display system has a pair of opposing major
surfaces that are nonparallel to one another in selected areas. Light rays directed toward the nonparallel area of the windshield are reflected from the outer and inner major surfaces of the windshield and directed toward the eye of the observer as parallel or superimposed light rays to eliminate ghost images when viewing images projected by the head-up display system through the windshield. The interlayer blank utilized to make the windshield has a non-uniform thickness profile with a tapered thickness positioned in the selected areas of the windshield.
Bottom line is the inner layer is thinner in the viewing area to help improve clarity and reduce ghosting.
If you make a claim through the insurance company, (or make a police report and go after the truck owner) make sure you tell them the rock came "OFF of the truck". If you say it got kicked up from their tire, you're outta luck.

the HUD windshield cost alot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ just had a new one put in my vert.
If the car is equipped with HUD from the factory the windshield should have HUD on the lable etched into the lower corner of the glass on the passenger side. My 02 says "Shaded HUD Solar Ray".
Insist they replace the side trim pieces and the weatherstrip should be new. The side pieces when removed use a self stick adhesive and it must be either completely removed from all pieces and then new adhesive applied or replaced with new part. (I think they are under $20. it is part of described procedure in the FSM) Since glass installers are sure heck not going to take that time to clean the trim piece and the channel and apply new adhesive if they don't replace it with new and just stick it back on, you may get leaks. Windshield weatherstrip should also be new each time the windshield is replaced. The new windshield weatherstrip has self stick adhesive and sticks only in the upper corners and most lowest point of attach. The rest of the attachment is either screws and it tucks in.
The lower right corner of the windshield has the information printed on it. Ensure the glass company uses that model number windshield.
As advised above, trying to go after the trucking company is a first call. However, alot of firms won't except the blame. It's too easy for drivers to make up a damage story and try to pin it on them. Many auto insurance companies pay out windshields with little or no issues for the car owner. If yours doesn't, look for another company.
JetJock is right on spot.....the info you want to look at is called the "bug" its on the passenger side lower corner

You want a APTech windshield...DW1430..and ONLY the APTech DW1430....the number DW1430 and a 'NAGS" number which describes the windshield Block number and etc....The DW1430 will cost someplace between 300 and 500 bucks....
APTech also makes a DW1514...it will cost someplace between 900 and 1300 bucks....

However, some owners have put regular windshields in their HUD equipped car and have been very satisfied with the results.

Read my first link.....in every way...the 1430 and the 1514 were the same...when and only when we're taliking about APTech Glass..APTech IS the OEM mgf of teh corvette windshield..I compared them side by side...
True that any DW1430 will fit any Corvette but NOT JUST ANY DW1430 is HUD rated

Remember!
If it falls from a truck (or anything else for that matter) the insurance companies feel it cannot be avoided and you're covered - if it falls from a truck and hits the ground and then hits you....the insurance companies feel it is avoidable and your fault and you will not be covered.
At least that happened to a friends C5 that got a new bumper from a 2x4 falling off of a truck....hes agent made it very clear that the 2x4 must have fell off of the truck directly into his car....
