up to say 70 what are your opinions on the power of the two, do you think the vara-ram would give more power? it has less square inches of filter area than the zip tie mod

I ran both...and really you are probably pulling in hotter air with the zip tie than with the Vararam, which kills hp. If you have the money... go with the Vararam...if not the zip still works great.

I tried the zip tie mod and I can't say I noticed a "seat of the pants" gain while street driving. And I don't track my car. Like pit-man said, you're pulling hot air from engine compartment. I put my air box back in and called it a day. By looking at the design of the stock box, I felt it probably did a better job of grabbing some cooler air. Hey, try it out and let us know what you think. It's free
For those that say the zip tie mod is just sucking in hot air... it's very misleading!
Makes me wonder if any of you have ever looked at the location and the design of the area around the intake? It is way ahead of the engine, even in front of the radiator where cold air travels up (when in motion) due to the "scoop" under the car.
When in traffic (0-20mph so to speak), it might suck in a bit more hot air than, say, vararam or OEM. I would think at high speed vararam might be a bit more efficient because the air is directly channeled to the front of the filter panel. Intake temp should be about the same though.
cut open the air box lid..i did about 4x6 inches...did it 3 yrs ago.put the $$ your save to a tune...
with tune and exhaust i did fine on the dyno and hp gains...

I think what is misleading is you changing my words around. I never said anything about Just sucking in hot air. I said probably pulling in hotter air. That can be 3 degrees or whatever. Who cares...I actually agree with you, however on a 50 degree day I think you will be pulling in some of the compartment air along with the cold from the front. The air is going to mix and will not be the same temp as the Vararam constant from the front. I also said the zip is still a good thing. To tell the truth, I never felt seat of the pants from either and they probably aren't that far apart. I just think for drag racing, every little bit adds up if you are right on the edge like Fartpipe...running about 10+ runs at 11.01. Just my opinion, not wanting an argument.

one thing I like about my Vararam, looking at my older logs, my intake temps was rediculous. sometimes I'll be injesting 140*-150* air. now with my vararam, whatever my a/c outside temp reading is, my intake temps logs usually show 1*-2* within that.
take it for what its worth.
If you're on a budget do the Flip-tie, not the zip-tie. It's a budget Honker.
+1 If you take your time and cut a perfect hole in your shroud as to where the air box fits exact and flush then go to a home improvement store, get some good weather striping (auto/boat specific),place that around the hole you cut in the shroud, it completely seals the air filter off from the engine bay so it always gets the coldest air possible. Then get a smooth bellow and you have a cheap set-up that is as good as any cai .IMHO
