Default Am I missing a bolt here?

While under the car doing my first oil change I noticed what looks like a bolt missing. This piece is directly under the starter on the passenger side of the engine. It is a black plastic cover of some kind and the bolt hole appears to have threads in it but hard to tell. This is on a 2002
6sp convertible.

Judging from the lack of any markings around the hole, it appears there was never a bolt there in the first place.

It also does not look like it needs one structurally.

But, pull the bold next to the hole and see if it threads into the vacant hole okay. If it does, buy another and put it where the sun don't shine....uh...in the questionable hole.

But really, the surface of the bracket looks like there was not a bolt there in the first place ......and I'm too lazy right now to go look under mine!!

I'd say, replace the bolt. I've heard other members comment on the engine casting breaking in the area of the starter, it could be a GM "cost saving move" that backfired, or just an omission. But in any case it looks like some type of stiffener, and with one bolt in it, it will eventually loosen with vibration.

I don't see any reference to this part in the part's illustrations. it might be in place for only the assembly/installation process at the factory. since it's plastic it's doubtful to have any structural value and there's no evidence of fluid leakage with just the one bolt so I'd leave it be.

if it ain't broke, don't fix it

The parts catalog shows that item as a "Transmission Cover" and only shows one bolt fastening it. There's one on the opposite side too. Different shape of course, also with one bolt.

More of a "dust cover" or "close-out panel/plate" type thing. You're in good shape.

That is exactly what it looked like to me, a dust cover over the bell housing. Thank you very much for checking that out for me. I appreciate that very much. Now I can go drop the car off the ramps and get back on the road.
