Default MN6, rebuild or replace?

My tranny (120k) is suffering from paper blocker syndrome. It's never been abused it just grinds a little here and there and gets real stiff and notchy once in awhile. It won't be long before I'll need to have it fixed.

Taking into account todays economy is it better to rebuild or replace with a used unit? I will outsource the work.

Surprised that there are no replies. If you go used, how do you know if it was abused or not and how long it will last. If you find one that checks out, I would look for an 01 or newer with the carbon blocker rings as I`m sure you know. If it`s cheap to rebuild, I would rather go that way. I like having the same parts (that have been repaired) go back in my car that came out. That way I know it fit before, it will fit and work going back in.

Rebuild the unit. No sense in buying a used unit that has essentially the same inherit problems yours has.

Another vote for a rebuild and you will have a warranty, used and it can go boom and you are not only out the tranny $$ but the labor is also lost

After the 3rd failure of my MM6 on the '99, last time being the blockers and my use of Mobil One fluid (duh attack), I gave up and replaced it with a non-Borg Warner trans. The first two repairs were synchros, gears and etc. The second failure was the main shaft inside which resulted in a clunking sound in 5th and 6th gear. No problems after the replace. I hear that RPM Transmissions (forum sponsor) make some good ones.

Replace the fluid using Amsoil ATD first, you may be surprised.
