Wondering if I can get some input. I have 5500 miles on my '01 Z06. I have noticed that I am getting that 'feathering' wear on the outside of the front tires. This was the same problem I had on my '99 hardtop. I have checked the specs for the '01 Z06 posted here and noticed that GM chooses a negative camber for performance but this contributes to the premature wear. Since I don't officially race, I allowed the dealer to change this to zero. I really don't like the handling now-whether this is due to the change in the camber or an overall bad alignment I can't tell. Anyone have any suggestions about happy medians of performance handling and longer tire wear?
Would really appreciate an answer.
A bit of feathering on the outside shoulder is normal, particularly if you drive fairly aggressively on curvy roads often. You can even this out by swapping the tires side to side.
From what I read in your post you had the dealer change the camber from a bit negative to zero. That's the wrong way. You want to go more negative.
I think the nominal spec is about -0.25 (or is it -.75?). In any event adding about another quarter to half degree in the negative direction to the norminal spec should reduce the outside feathering, but at some point it will start wearing the inside shoulder more.
Additional negative camber on the front will also improve turn-in response and lessen understeer a bit.
Thanks for your response. I actually had some major feathering on the hardtop -enough to have to trash the tires. SO I am trying to be preventative. I believe that I will change the camber back to negative-the rep said that negative wears the outside-which obviously makes no sense. I am also getting a little play in the steering wheel and wondering if
the toe is off now too?
Just curious to know if everyone is sticking to the recommended alignment from GM or are people getting creative?
Thanks for your help.
