Here's the deal: I have a automatic c5 and I'm thinking about switching to a manual transmission instead of purchasing a new car. Is there any draw backs to doing this type of switch? I have a manual C5 transmission with 35,000 miles on it and my current a4 transmission has 65,000 miles on it. I have a good deal on the install and I'm just wanting to know if this is a good idea or not. I really like my car and I don't want to get rid of it, but I want a manual at the same time. I just am nervous about there being problems, so if anyone has any insight on this issue your comments would be greatly appreciated.
I know two guys that have been working on cars pretty much all of their lives. Their dad owns a shop and they are pretty well known. One of these guys just switched his own transmission (regular c5 manual transmission) to a c6 zo6 transmission. he has had it on for about three months and it has been working perfectly fine. I also know a real shop (Quality Motor Sports) which I get work done at- they said they would do it, but it will be for basically 10 times the price of the other guys. Even if I do go to the shop, do you think it is a good idea? I really love this car, only set back is that it is automatic.
YA, switching your car to a manual will be like getting a new car. There is nothing like a Manual Sports Car.. Much more Control, and FUN.. If you can get a GOOD deal on the Labor and if they will back up their work DO IT!!.. I don't know everything that is involved in doing this switch but I'm sure it's Alot.. (Pedals, Transsmission, Shifter, Clutch, Drive Shaft..ETC. I'm sure you would have to reprogram your PCM or get a New one.. Let us know if how it turn out!! Good LUCK!!
Ohh, I just re-Read your above post and your friend who switched from a C5-Manual to C6 Z06 Manual is no where near as involved as an automatic to manual switch..

There have been a few forum members that have posted about doing this swap. Don't know if a search will bring up the posts or not. But, if you can be sure the shop will do an excellent job, go for it.
