Yesterday I posted this on the C6Z and OT with a pic of my C6Z...It was such a hit I figured Id do it again, but this time with my C5 Vert to make it C5 Gen material....and since many of you dont go over to the C6Z and OT side of the forum you might enjoy seeing it too....
I took this pic of my first car in 1974...(68 Impala SS, 327, 4 spd).....I was 17 years old...
Today I took this pic of my C5 Vert from the exact same corner I took the above pic from 34 years ago....Notice the building across the street in both pics???...It was my bank in 1974....Still is today

Yeah but.....I seldom could afford to have more than 1/4 tank back then....In reality, that 55 cents a gallon in 1974 equates to about $2.50 in todays dollars...So it's not that far off track now that it's back under $3 a gallon...That $4 a gallon CRAP this summer sucked though!!!..That place is still a gas station (Shell today...Amoco in 1974...I worked there from 1973 til 1982)...I filled up my Vert before taking that pic today...Regular was $2.70 a gallon....I used premium of course at $2.99
Thats cool that you can get the same place and take a pic of old and new. Love the C6 Z! too
Yup...Here's a couple "old and new" comparisons.....Im "new" in the "old" and "old" in the "new"....Not really C5 Gen material..but HEY, I highly doubt Id own either of my C5s had I not had this job for so LONG!!!!
Feb. 1979...21 years old
Oct. 2008...51 years old

Hi There:
What a couple of cool cars & a great flash back. That must bring back a lot of good memories for you.The year before (73) opec cut the gas production to the U.S. A lot of people that car pooled missed some work days because of it, me included. If I was photoshop smart I could do the same thing with the same identical background, from the fall of 1963 with my 1960 2dr. ht. Impala. Gas was 30 cents a gal.As you stated a buck was hard to come by then & even harder in 1963.
Thanks for the rare pictures.

Oh yeah, since I worked at that station during that time I remember those LONG gas lines...$2 limit...That pic was taken in early 74 (trees were bare)....I also know it was early 74 because I repainted the car that summer...
Also, our gas pumps would only go up to 99.9 cents per gallon..Once gas went over a dollar a gallon we rolled the price back to half price, then charged double what the pump read..People could NEVER get used to that...For example, when gas hit $1.10 a gallon we rolled the price at the pump back to 55 cents a gallon...If it said $10 on the pump it was sometimes difficult to tell the customer that they really owed $20, even if they could easily see that we had pumped 18 gallons of gas...C'MON man...How can you expect to pay $10 for 18 gallons of gas when the gas is over a dollar a gallon???...Thankfully that was before the days of self serve.....By the time the "self serve" days came around we had modern pumps that would go over a dollar a gallon..
30 years makes for alot of hash marks on the sleeve And alot of good stories. I got out after 26 years. Enjoy the Z. Love the old pics.
Actually, I'll have 26 years this December 15th.....Im 51, I have four more years to go before I can pull my retirement without penalty......
I was a reserve officer from Feb 1979 til Dec 1982...Back then, you could be a reserve officer at 21 yoa but you couldnt get hired as a full-time officer until you were 25 yoa..I was hired full-time in Dec 1982 after my 25th birthday.......I never understood why they wouldnt hire full-time at 21 until a few years back when it was changed to 21 and we started hiring 21 year olds....Dont get me wrong...there are some pretty sharp 21 year olds out there....but this is a job where you can affect peoples lives on a Biblical scale (well, almost)....Not that you have that much more life experience at 25...but those four years certainly made a difference with me...
BTW, if you like the old pics check out my website.... www.dansamento.com There are some more old ones there from my "Ford-daze"

I remember when snickers bars were a nickel, and I walked to school on my hands and knees backwards uphill both ways in the snow!!!! AND WE WERE HAPPY TO DO IT!! This is starting to sound like thread my dad would post and I'm 40.

Neat set of pictures.... I think I'll get some shots with the gas prices at $2.xx currently... I'm wondering what things will be like 10-15 years from now.
I bet you've written a speeding ticket or two in your time..
What's the fastest you've written a ticket (or taken someone to jail) for?
