From: "Man been singin' the Blues, since he began to till the ground"...Vancouver, USA WA.
Actually, I think it's pretty high, better than you would think. It's kinda like a Nascar thing, as long as you remain seated you'll do well. Other than that, good luck. JOE
Well I don't know of any crash tests, But I have been in a slight accident in my 2003 and while I was at the Corvette-Only repair shop, I was talking with the owner. He said they have worked on all corvette years, but that the C-5 and C-6 are pretty tough customers. He had one leave the turnpike at 50 mph, hit the guardrail, a bunch of trees and landed nose down on the roadway slope. Once back at the shop it was disassembled and sent to the frame shop. Came back right away as the frame wasn't damaged at all. So it was a right front suspension, a fender, bumper and hood and it was done. So I think after all the corvettes they have fix, that's a pretty good endorsement.
There was a posting a long time back about the crash testing of the New 97 C5 and they did extremely well. In fact they did better than most because of the configuration of the cockpit.
Front, side, and azz end collisions were really pretty sustainable.
I'll see if I can find the link.
There are plenty of times pics were posted here that you could not believe that the person undid their seat belt and walked off.
Check the Federal site ,,all cars have to pass a federal standard,,so there has to be a record somewhere!! Would seem the long snout should do well in frontal impact (as long as you don't go under something higher than you, like the jacked up pickups) They have a pretty good perimeter frame/passenger cage. Some people have walked away from some heavy hits!
Of course they are crash tested. I'm sure the records are out there somewhere. The idea of a glass car being flimsy is just uninformed. The frame is quite significant and designed with crash safety in mind. Vette's are excused from roll bar requirements for some classes in the open road race races I run because of the strength of the structure in the A & B pillars. I have no concerns about it's lack of crash worthiness.
That old thing about being safer in the big old metal elephants we used to drive is hogwash. People were slaughtered by knife edges and no cushioning in those things.
There is also a thread over in the c6 section on this topic ( http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=2136975 ) - the net seems to be that there is no requirement for crash testing, and although GM does do some, they are not obligated to share their results.
I wousl also suggest that if we have any emergency responders, they could give us their gut feel.
I just know about word of mouth from shops. But as the others said it does pretty well. I was told the front and rear will take a lot of impact, and the **** pit area is very strong. I few months ago I had a jacked up truck push me down the road and there was only superficial damage to the car.
Notice that according to Edmunds.com during those model years, the C5and C6 Base Model Coupes were never tested for crash ratings by either the NHSTA or the IIHS....not even for the bumber bash testing. Anyone else have info to the contrary?
