Default col. lock issue

Got in the car yesterday turned the key got the dreaded pull key wait 10 sec. then the service col. lock.Checked the posts about this, they said this can happen with low battery voltage so I started there. the batt. was low 11.6 volts, so I charged it tried the key again it didn't work. Then I pulled the cover in the pass. side footwell wiggled some wires around on the left side of the module next to the fuse box, stuck the key back in the ignition the column worked then.I think I better order a clb but I don't know If any of the fac. recalls have been done.I know I should install the clb but if just wiggling some wires around solved the problem .I doubt the clb will prevent this from happening again,I read some of the horror stories about problems some guy's had after installing the clb with the fuel shutoff.car has 80 k on it it's a 98 w/mn6.

Hi there, yes I had this dreaded problem too. The recall had already been done on my car, that didn't obviously work so I installed the clb. That worked for about a week, then low and behold one night left me stranded again. Sad part is I was about 2 miles away from the chevy dealership. I thought I could just creep down there since I could only go a mile and a half an hour before the fuel pump would shut her down. That didn't work because I could only let out the clutch 3/4 of the way out. Wasn't trying to burn up my clutch too so...I have to put her on a flat bed and I thought I was going to cry.
So the stealership told me first that it wsa the Theft Security Module and relay, so we replaced that. I told them that I was pretty sure it was the BCM and they kept saying no no all the tests on that are coming out fine. And I said well if you end up replacing all this little crap and then tell me its the bcm I'm going to be livid. Sure enough the next morning I got a phone call, it was the BCM. SO I had that replaced and so far so good. I did take out the clb before I took it into the dealership. And I havent put it back in, so far so good. It was a battle.
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions about all this, I sure went through the ringer.

Thank's for the reply kre8ful1.How long have you been driving without the clb installed?Seems like just about everybody on the forum that post's about this problem say's it's just a matter of time when it will happen not if.I haven't driven the car yet since it has happened and went away.I still have to determine If it has had a recall preformed, just haven't had time to get into it yet, should have time in the next couple of day's.

My 2000 FRC had 2 recalls done (wheel still turned with the ignition off and locked). I ordered a CLB and figured "no rush,,it's had recalls done". Big mistake,,,about 6monts later it stranded me about 2 miles from home.Put the Clb in (had to pull some extra fuses to get it to kick in properly) 3 months and over 3000 miles and no sweat!! If I ever get a tune I'll have them change the fuel cut off from 2 mph to like 250 just in case!! The 2mph was programed in the 2nd recall fix, so an done from # 2 on got this wonderful addition!!

I know I've been having problems with the fuel shutoff and still get pull key, wait 10 seconds EVERY single day, 9 out of 10 times I start my car, and have been dealing with this problem since January of this year. Replaced battery, installed CLB, cleaned key off..........I hope you are a lucky one, where the CLB fixes it all. Otherwise it will drive you insane.

The fuel shutoff is a program installed by the dealer as a "fix". That's what you get from going to the dealer.

The CLB fixes the column lock. You have to find a tuner to increase the fuel shutoff to 255mph which is the max.

Moral of the story, stay the hell away from the dealer.

Can't help with a specific tuner, but the only two tuning tools that can reset the fuel shut off value are HP Tuner software and EFI Live tuner software. Who ever you contact make sure they have one of these two tools.

Well its been 3 or 4 months, and I've been problem free. Another thing it could be is your battery. I was having a bad problem with my ac drains clogging up and it was dripping all over my passenger floor. And as you know the bcm is behind the panel in the passenger floor. So I'm wondering if mine got wet and it just shorted or something or maybe even fried it. I don't know. But so far so good. Some people told me to put the clb back in but I didn't yet only because the bcm and parts they put in are under warranty and if something happens with those the damn dealer can fix it. Hopefully it wont happen again. Just call up to the dealer and have them run your vin and they can tell you over the phone what recalls have been done and if there are any open that havent been done. Good luck!

Called the dealer yesterday, service man. said all the recalls have been done on my car.I looked at the bcm and saw a harness with a tag on it that didn't look original,It had a upc bar code on one side and on the other side was a date 12/19/01.They told me I could bring the car in to have it looked at,of course at my own expense.I was at a car show before this happened and the car sat in a monsoon rain storm all day and drove it home in the rain.I guess it's poss. some water did get in there and corrode some connection because it did sit for about 10 to 12 day's before I had the problem, plus the low battery probably aggrevated the problem also.Obviously the recalls done on my car left the lockplate in.I see a clb in my futureBTW I have checked the udders and cleaned them out month's before I had this problem.Thanx for the help guy's.
