I know what you said about the dash-mat, but had one until just a week ago for five years when I had my windshield replaced.
I noticed the glare too - since I had none when I had the dashmat.
Frankly, the windshield has a very steep rake and the glare is troublesome, but if you don't like the glare and you don't want a dashmat, I think you'll have to live with it and get used to it.
