I caused the shortage.
I changed my oil this past weekend. Mobil 1 5-30.
There is no Amsoil ATD or Extreme Gear Oil either.
I needed them for the trans and rear.
Washed the car too. No water left now. Sorry for the inconvenience.
They are all out of 5W-30 in these parts, so I bought some via Amazon. I have a few quarts in my garage so I don't want to change brands. Heck, I change oil in my Mazda turbo and C5 only once per year, so I'm not too concerned if I spend an extra $20 to get the 2 six packs to my door.
I also noticed that Walmart was out of 10W30 Mobil 1 yesterday. They had plenty of the Extended Performance blends, but I don't see any reason to pay extra if I am not going to let the oil go 15,000 miles.
I usually check waaaaay before I need it, and pick up a 5 quart jug in advance. I refuse to pay the $6.50 + for individual quarts, so I guess I will just have to keep looking....
We regret the limited availability of Mobil 1 motor oil. Due to the impact of Hurricane Ike on our raw material suppliers, we are experiencing limited availability of Mobil 1 motor oils. We appreciate your loyalty to the Mobil 1 brand and the trust you have placed in our products. We are working quickly to have your choice of Mobil 1 motor oils available at normal levels as soon as possible. Thank you for you patience.
I just changed mine yesterday and used Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic. After doing some research, the numbers looked better than Mobil 1. IMHO, as long as it meets, or exceeds, GM specs, any synthetic will do.
GM only used GY tires for years on the vette, cause they got kickbacks from GY. Now, all of a sudden, they are using Michelins on the ZR1. They only use Mobil 1 because.......something to think about.

The information regarding the closure of the Exxonmobil synthetics plant is accurate. Ike left approximately 12 feet of water thoughout the chemical complex that produces Mobil1 base stock and the plan is to be up and running by the end of the year.
Keep the faith and bare with us, please!

does this mean we will be buying watered down m1 in the near future?
Being an Amsiol distributor I am familiar with all their comparisons to those other synthetics. Check it out through my Amsoil link in www.MAGDANA.com and you may be eager to change over to Amsoil.
