When I hard wired my radar detector to the auto dim mirror (I have a 2001) I get two outcomes. there are 2 orange wires. If wired to one you have hard power all of the time no matter what, I dont like it.
And the other every time I open the door my radar detector turns off and on again. Sometimes when Im driving in the car it wont power on unless I open a door and keep it open.
What the heck is going on here?
I think this may be tied to my electrical issues where Ive removed some relays from the fuse box and installed them back the wrong way.
Mine is wired the same way. Its constant power to the rearview. I have to remember to turn it off when not in use. Other solution is to wire to the fusebox going down the A pillar.

Any ideas? Thanks
You have wired your + wire to the timed power wire for the "entry/courtesy" lamps. The lights turn off with the timer and to turn them on you must reset the timer(open the door).
You have a couple of options to get an additional switched acc power source
The easiest is to use fuse #22 which is live but not used for any other function. I used an “add a circuit” connector to hook in. This gives you the switched hot.
These are not my pics but show you the hook ups
You can see how the connectors slot into the fuse box/
The other option is to hook up into the spare connector which is available for ancillary devices. I believe this is used for the CD changer so it may not be an option for you if you have one of those fitted.
In the passenger footwell (unless you have a 2004) behind the kick board you’ll see a fuse block and to its left a silver box which is the BCM. There are three wires taped together feeding into a connector.
The Black wire is ground; the Orange wire is powered through fuse #7 but is permanent hot. The Yellow wire is powered through fuse #11 and is switched hot when the key is in the ACC or ON positions. Hook up to the Yellow for switched ACC.
is there any way to get ignition power from one of the wires on the mirror?
If not I'll follow what you have above DeeGee thanks
PM me with your E Mail and I'll send the wiring diagram. Looking at it I'd say the description above is accurate. I dont think either of the feeds (Ignition 3 voltage and back up lamp supply voltage) is regular switched power.

can you elaborate why you don't like it to have constant power? I have my V1 wired that way. If I leave it on it shut's down in 15 minutes or so after ignition is shut off and powers back up when the door is opened. a perfect situation I would think

I dont have a V1 I think mine would stay on continuously and I drive the car once every 1-2 weeks so that would be draining the battery and the detector is on for no reason.

it's not the V1 it's self that shuts down, it's the power to the mirror. just like the courtesy lamps shut off if you leave the doors open for a certain length of time. same for the underhood lamp.
if there is a power drain in certain circuits after the ignition is switched off, that circuit will be shut down after a certain length of time. the mirror circuit is one of those
I wired mine about 2 years ago and maybe forgot but think ignition power is in the brown wire. I just used a ground light to find the wire. Strange item...on a 6-speed one of the wires is hot with the ignition on and in reverse!!! Fine until you back out and put it in first, detector shuts off!
If you are using the wire from the detector, just cut it to length and "tin" the ends; stick them in the wire slot and put a drop of glue in there to help keep it in place.

I didn't have all these probs when I wired my V1 to my '02's mirror, and just used the farthest wire in the plug to the passenger's side of the mirror din plug for the hot and the wire right next to it for the earth. Powered on when engine running, off when not. Doors open/closed, windows in any position, whatever.
That's perfect thank you so much guys, it was getting annoying.
I wonder why its a source of confusion on the forum and so many people go to the fuse panel area when its right there.

I wired my V1 for constant on and if you forget to turn it off it powers down with the mirror. For me this was better than on/off every time you open/close the door (which how I initially wired it)
