Burned C5 frame question?
Hey guys, I am working on a Z06 project and I am needing to section some front frame rails. I have found a C5 frame that is pretty much perfect, except it was involved in a fire. I really am not sure where the fire started (engine or cabin area), but the car is pretty much burned down to the frame. What I am wondering, is whether or not the fire weakened the frame? I was told I can pretty much have the car, but was wondering if it would be worth the hassle.
C5s are cheep enough you should be able to find non burned to a crisp parts
100% Since you have no idea of the nature of the fire, you also don't know how hot it got and what effect it would have on the molecular structure of the metal. Me, I wouldn't take a chance. . . . Yes, I am a welder by trade.
The side rails of the C5 frame were made by taking a tubular piece of steel and hydroforming it into the rectangular/bent piece that goes from the front frame crossmember to the rear frame crossmember. Doubt that it is tempered.

Thanks guys from the comments! All I am wanting out of this car is the front frame rails or front frame section from cowl forward. I definately would not try to repair this car as there is literally nothing left except the frame, crossmember, torque tube, etc. I am just needing a front clip for my Z06 and since I had easy access to it, I thought I would see what you guys thought about it. Yeah, I can buy a complete front clip for $3k-$4k but finding it in the right color and then maybe still having to paint, I'm just seeing what my options are. I know going with a complete front clip would be the best way!
I'm not an engineer, but I would think that the C-5 Corvette frame may be tempered steel. If it is, a fire will destroy it's strength.
The frame is hydroformed, that means it is cold worked to shape using water as a hydraulic fluid. while it is not quenched and tempered my guess would be there is some cold working gone on and it will be harder than unworked steel, I would stay away from a burned frame.

Thanks guys, my initial thoughts was to just let this one pass. But for someone pretty much willing to give it to you, I had to ask. Anybody local to SC who may have a front frame section, just let me know.
