High miles can be REAL expensive problem time...I'm at mid 120 K on my '98, and having LOTS of electrical issues, recent front crankshaft pulley replacement, serpentine tensioners and belts, both column control wands, and will have rear wheel bearings done REAL soon....Oh, yeah, rotors and pads were done this fall too. I have the auto trans flushed every year like clockwork, and the diff drained and re-filled every 18 months, but I put a LOT of miles on mine, so keeping all the fluids and lubes fresh is extra important to preserve the systems. 2 years ago I had a HUGE Ron Davis radiator put in because the stocker was just not up to the job in 85 degree summer heat, and WAY BAD when it got into the 90s and 100s

I have had the electronic climate control out 2 times to re-solder internal failed solder joints, and now have bulbs burning out in the radio to deal with.

So far no issues with major electrical items like alternator or starter, just a lot of fairly expensive small electronic/electric item failures and bad/corroded ground terminations. The engine/drive line seem OK....at least it will be OK until something breaks!

WOW!! I have a 2000 Vert A4 with 152K+ miles and have had NO major problems at all. I have had to replace the headlamp motors, after 7 years.

The top has a few wear spots, but still surviving after all these miles.

I am the second owner. The engine, A4 tranny and 2:73 diff are stock. CAI and Bullits, stock tune. On 10-18-08 the vette pulled 317.04 rwhp and 320.22 tq. A previous run a few days earlier showed 305.02 rwhp and 310.14 Tq. the humidity setting was wrong on the dyno that day, hence the lower numbers.

Try to get some background on the Vette, if there is a solid history behind it that is a plus, if not... ya roll the dice....

JB.

Replies seem to be mostly negative for it and a couple positive. Electrical problems are a nightmare to find and fix. I dont want that. I'll have to see if someone can check it out and get more history of the car.

Those miles could be fine and the car could be alright, but those are too many miles to gamble. There are plenty of C5s out there and newer C5s are only getting cheaper. Fools rush in, don't let emotion get the best of you.

I would honestly keep looking for a vette with lower miles. If you are still not convinced I will loan you mine for a week and that should change your mind.

It might be fixed by the time you get it back.

I prefer a red, auto, coupe, 2001-2004 for $6k less than nada. Somewhere close to GA. I would consider other colors since they all look good.

I can personally speak for high mileage cars as the '99 that I recently gave away to my son, I'm the one who put 310,000 on it and it just passed 320,000 for my son. Since I was the only owner, I knew how it was driven and I took care of it. Said this lots of times, that nothing lasts forever. Things will fail. A car with 156,000, if you personally knew the owner and saw this car on a near daily basis and saw if it was being taken care of and driven properly, then depending on the price, it might be a good deal. Otherwise, if you know nothing about it, then you are running a huge risk. With enough money on-hand, you can fix anything that wears out of course and if you fix things right away as they happen, you will be driving instead of having it sit waiting for enough cash to fix it. The clutch is done if its an MM6. HVAC compressor too or will fail soon. Headlamp controller and headlamp switch will both fail eventually. As noted already, the lamps inside the radio and HVAC system will go bad, but easy to replace and cheap. If the plug wires haven't been done, its time for them too. Now something I didn't do until mine hit 274,000 was the lifters. I wore out one for sure, possibly two therefore I replaced them all. While I was at it with the heads off, I had the valve guides replaced, springs and valve stem seals and of course, re-do the valve seats for preventative maintenance. The original valve guides were worn to %50 of the allowed tolerance which is pretty good. To this day, its still on the original timing chain, cam, crank, water pump, alternator, starter, PS pump, air-pump, steering rack and so on. My largest problem with the car was the BorgWarner transmission that it wasn't supposed to have. After its 3rd major failure, I gave up and put in a Tremec.
So, as other's have said, you can find a car with less miles for the proper amount of money. If if know for sure how this car has been taken care of, then its your choice. I wouldn't have tried to sell mine as no one in their right mind, not knowing me, would buy my car. My son knows how well I've taken care of it therefore its his now and if it became a money-pit for him, he said he'll give it back to me and I'll make sure its perfect. BTW, its stock all the way, well it is for now...lol. Its due for the bottom end to be opened up, new bearings and so on.

Way too many miles for me to consider. Even if the car runs great now, chances are something is going to wear out soon. Unless the price is just too good to pass up and you can do some work yourself, I'd pass.

They have it listed for $13,200. I'll probably pass but I'll keep it in mind if I find out it's been maintained good and already had things fixed that would go bad.

Yes check and see if they kept all the service records on it. And if it was serviced all the time and on time..You should not have any problems..Just ask for the paper work for all the service's.

Not to be mean but, if you have to try to plan the loan amount around a car with that many miles you probably cannot afford it. How much is it going to be worth when you do have it paid for and 200K on the clock. I would suggest being patient.

If it has been maintained and cheap enough price, go for it.
