Fall Drive
The trees are giving their best show of the year. The golds, reds and yellows on the trees hang over the road and cover the hillsides. Almost no traffic. There are some very nice Corvette roads in western Oregon country. We used Hwy 101 south to Reedsport and east on Hwy 38 to Elkton, and on to Drain. About 4 miles east of Reedsport the state has set up an Elk viewing area on the south side of the road. You rarely see less than 50 elk any time you go by. The boys usually stay by themselves as do the ladies.
When we left town I got some liquid gold (gas) and, in Oregon, you cannot serve yourself. So, we grit our teeth and let the gas jockey have his way with the fill. At $2.39 a gallon for premium, it's about $2.00 a gallon less than the summer price. As we sat in the station, a '98 Pace Car went past. We saw him parked in town as we left. I love the paint and trim on them, my wife hates the whole thing.
There appear to be few/no State Troopers around on Sunday in our part of the country. I still don't take chances, as Oregon uses any kind of vehicle as a traffic car, including white Ford pickups. 63 in a 55 posted zone is about my limit. But, what the heck, we were out to see the sights anyway.
Typical to most of the inland towns on the central Oregon coast , Drain was/is a logging town. Loggers anywhere in the woods today are feeling the pinch of the glut of finished lumber available in todays dead building economy. And it's sad to see a once thriving enterprise hurt as bad as logging.
We ate lunch in Drain at the local resturant and left about 1:30. We got back about 3:30. All in all, a great day in a great car with a wonderful companion of 51 years.
