I mount my GPS on the windshield. The whole reason for the seperate unit is so that I don't have to look down (take my eyes off of the road) when driving.
That why I'm not installing an all in one stereo system. As I don't want to have to look down to see what the instructions are.

I believe you'll find most GPS units operate OK mounted down near the console although it will likely take a little longer to lock on if you've powered off for a while. But, IMHO, the further you have to take your eyes off the road the more dangerous referring to a GPS screen is. There are methods of mounting that allow almost no loss of front view vision yet permit super quick dismounting for storage.

My GPS has turn by turn navigation that speaks the name of the street, (I think most of them made now do this) so you don't really have to look down, but even if you did have to occasionally I don't see the problem. Most every car in america with the exception of a few like ours, you have to take your eyes off the road to look at the guages and the speedo, so whats the big deal if every once in a while you look down at the GPS.
