most has to do with feel...driver preference. There is no mechanical advantage that is going to net you power to realize increases in what you're looking for...
As TGstring said, there is no mechanical advantage to short throw shifters. Perhaps if you are really banging gears you might save a few thousandths of a second between shifts just because you don't have to move the shifter as far. I have seen people post faster times after short throw's installed. I have a B&M Ripper, and I think the biggest thing about it is that it makes it feel more like a sports car, you don't have to move the shifter a mile between gears, however it does take a lot more pressure to put it in gear, especilly when downshifting.
I have noticed that having a short shifter makes the shifting more precise and I more consistently select the proper gear.
If you put in a short shifter (take a look at MGW or C6 Z06 shifters) do the anti-venom mod, which reduces pressure on the detente bolt and makes it easier (less pressure required) to shift gears.

I have noticed the exact opposite;
cars with short shifters are more prone to missed shifts as the precision required is greater than one with a well defined shift pattern...

but that's just MHO...
It seems this was true when I first got my Z06 and was not used to the short throw shifter. The gears are a lot closer together and therefore it is easier to put it in the wrong gear. I had a few 6 to 3 downshifts when aiming for 5th, and once shifted 4 to 3 when upshifting to 5th. Luckily I never did this when at high RPM's, just easy driving, so the engine didn't over Redline. I have heard of a few that have done some engine damage this way. It seems whenever I am driving hard and not thinking about the shifting, just doing it on instinct I don't have a problem.
I have noticed when driving other cars hard without a short throw shifter, you can sometimes not get the shifter firmly in gear before letting out the clutch which will grind and require pressing the clutch again to get it in gear, especially when going to third. A short throw shifter will minimize this. You know when the car is in gear, it is very firm and gets rid of the sloppiness.
Some of the fastest times on record were from drivers with the stock shifters because shift time is usually limited by your clutch pedal speed not shift lever speed.
Ihave a B&M ripper and it took a little getting used to. but it is a shorter throw. I dont seem to have any missed shift issues, but i do get a vibration type rattle around 3k rpm.
I have a hurst that was in my car for about 5k miles I'll sell for $135 shipped if you want to try one. I have the original box, and the extra springs, etc.
Mine came with a Hurst shifter in it. The previous one I owned was stock. For daily driving the stock one is fine. I'm not a drag racer so speed shifting 1-2-3-4 is not my concern. I run track. 2-3 shift is easy and you can't miss. The 3-4 shift is short and I use that a lot. Getting into 5th is ok. The thing with the Hurst is it is very ratchet like. You need to like that feel. The other thing is it rattles when you accelerate hard. I can live with that. I use an old fashioned Hurts ball for the ****. I got one made out of the stuff they make billiard ***** with. It never gets hot or cold. So on track the heat coming up doesn't burn me. The shaft of the shifter does get plenty hot though.
I can't stand the stock set up. Had a B&M in one of my Z's and loved everything about it except for the rattle. Current Z has an aftermarket shift **** and it's better than the stock set up, but if I'm going to start hitting the track again, I'll swap for a short throw. MUCH quicker in and out of the gears.
I had a Hurst in mine and it was noisey and notchy, even after greasing it, lubing it, changing the springs, adding sound damping, etc. It allowed me to move the shifter too quickly for the trans/clutch to be ready so it actually slowed me down as I had to make basically two shift movements.
I now have the 08Z shifter and it is quiet, smooth, barely longer throw (which I like) and I can shift fast with it. I like it much better. I don't recommend a short/race shifter unless you have one problem - shifter getting stuck between gears 1 and 3. I had a Camaro that would do that and a heavy duty shifter fixed it.
^Hey Graham. Good to see you posting again. How's the new Z? Take care, Don
Hey Don,
Been away for a while. Will be spending more time on here now. I see the most popular questions are the same ones they were a year ago
I replaced my 02 QS Z06 with an 02 EB Z06. It's getting there. Had to get all my track parts out of the QS one before it got hauled off. This time I'm using coil-overs. Got them where I like them. Car is corner weighted and track aligned. T1 bars and end links. Got the DRM ducts in. Just put in some new rotors and some hawk DTC-70s. All full of RP fluids. Oil cooler in. Some more CCWs and fresh set of Hooiser A6s. Trailer hitch and wiring. Going down to Road Atlanta this coming weekend. Yee haw!!! The car will be in its natural habitat
What a PITA having to take all that out of the other car and move it over. I'm getting good at taking it all apart though

Glad the race guys got you back in for some seat time again. If you get the chance to try a new shifter check out the new version of the C6Z shifter. I liked it alot. Have fun this weekend. Don
