I installed new MGW shifter today. Only drove it about thirty minutes so I am not totally sold on it yet. It is very pricise no doubt about the quality but it does take a lot more effort to shift. I had the 08 Z06 shifter in for about a year just decided to see what all the fuss was about. Just one question from those who have the MGW shifter, does it get easier to shift over time? And are you still satisfied with your decisiion?

I do not have the MGW shifter, but I have the Hurst.
The only way I would think it would get easier to shift would be if it is spring loaded and the springs get weaker over time. Most likely, it just seems easier because you get used to it. I have had the Hurst for 5 years, and still would not trade it for the stock shifter. I can tell exactly if it is fully in gear or not, where with the stock shifter, there were times when I was not sure.

I don't know if mine got easier over time or I just got used to it. Probably both honestly. It was pretty notchy at first if I remember correctly. I did change out the the tranny fluid when I installed it so maybe that helped too. It is one of the best aftermarket shifters I have ever used. Personal opinion of course.

Do you think changing the tranny fluid might help? I drove the car some more today. I am liking it better except 5 and 6 . I still don't like the extra effort to move the shifter in to that gate. The others are no problem. I probably will get used to it but I think I will change the fluid. What fluid did you use?

I am very happy with my MGW shifter, and I think it does break-in slightly with use. If it fails to meet your satisfaction quotient however, you can always perform the anti-venom mod. This basically involves shimming the detent bolt on the trans with a washer or two. Do a search if you're not familiar with it.

Yeah I am familiar with this mod and may do it after I change the tranny fluid. I want to try that first. Thanks

I installed a Hurst for a friend in a 99 conv. You will like it just be aware that the effort to move the shifter left to right will be greater than you are used to.

To those who are buying the Hurst, be awarw that it comes a different sets of springs to adjust the shifting stiifness. Start with the lightest, they are more than stiff enough for the street and will break-in the more you use it. I have mine a few years now and I can't see any reason to change it. It works smoothly and you always know what gear you are in. Much shorter shift throws than stock, at first you won't think you've shifted all the way.

but it does take a lot more effort to shift.
Hey got2hav1, perhaps you need to build up your arm strength with a couple dozen 12 ounce curls?

I'm considering the MTI six-shooter shifter...

You may be right! At least the muscles that make the 5 and 6 gear change.

Changing the tranny fluid can't hurt. When I switched to RP Synchromax things definitely got easier, especially when cold.

Like said before, it can't hurt to try changing out the tranny fluid. I used Max ATF because I couldn't find any Synchromax around anywhere. Doesn't take long to do it, so I guess I would at least try that. I am sure you will grow to really like the shifter.

FWIW, I changed my trans fluid, and did the detent mod, and there was no difference in effort. Used RP, too. I now have the C6Z shifter, and it's pretty smooth, comparatively, but the throws are longer than my old BPP. I don't think it matters much which shifter you use, there's always gonna be a resistance through the neutral gate.
