Default Knock Sensor Replacement

After having a local dealer bumble their way through not being able to fix dtc code 0327 on my car I have decided to try swapping out the knock sensors on my own. My problem is, I have no idea what they look like, where they are, or how to replace them. Can anyone help? Pics and detailed descriptions would be extremely appreciated. Thanks!

Pretty easy, actually. There are two in line in the valley cover under your intake manifold. You can see the two black plugs for the knock sensors in the pic here.

Pop one off and very carefully pull the connector off the sensor - they are a bit finicky to get off.

Plugs off.

Use a ratchet with extension to unscrew the sensor and install the new one to the prescribed torque. Here's what the sensor looks like.

I can send you the procedures you need to do this swap if you send me your email addy.

It's EASY-3 or 4 hours if you take your time, less if you've done it before. Get the gaskets, sensors and I replaced the bottom of the wells since I saw oil in mine.

I noticed you had a '98. I also have a '98. Just a FYI, there are two different types of sensors that were made in 98. I forgot the difference exactly but it has to do with the electrical connector. I'm pretty sure the one I have has a "tab" that is not pictured in the pic Patches posted above. I'd recommend taking out your sensor first so you can compare the new sensor.

The procedures I sent are '98-specific. There were actually 2 knock sensors listed in '98 - one with the tab and one without. The knock sensor part numbers for a '98 are:

With tab - 10456222
Without tab - 10456603
(Please confirm these numbers as they are difficult to read in the parts book.)

You have to pull the intake

On the LT1 and every other car I've owned it just screwed into the block.

It's really not that big of a deal to pull the intake. It's only 8 bolts and a few hoses and electrical fittings... you'll have to pull it if- A) your knock sensors take a crap B) the oil pressure sender takes a crap C) the dreaded P1416 check valve takes a crap.

They are in the side of the block in later gen LS engines but I agree with Eric that it is a simple job to get to them.

Does anyone know what they should be torqued to when reinstalling? And someone mentioned one having a tab and one not. Which one is which and are they specific or can a non tab be used in place of a tab or vice versa?

13 lb. ft. - it's in the procedure I sent. When you remove your sensors is probably when you'll find which style sensor you have since your model year has both styles listed - see my post above.

I have a new knock sensor, GM#10456222 without tab, just like the picture Patches posted, that you can have. I ordered it for my '98, but it was the wrong one...so I had to order the one with the tab. The dealer couldn't tell me which part number was the correct one, even with the VIN #. If this is is what you need, PM me you address and I'll mail it to you.

Merry Christmas,
coast7

Do the sensor plugs pull straight up or is there some trick to them?

There's a release on mine.

Hey, you're in the same state as I am - why not just drive down Saturday and I'll help you with it.

I appreciate the offer but I actually got it off right after I posted that. Just took more finagling than I had anticipated!

I took a look at the intake and you're right, that is a snap. I still don't want to have to fool with it though
