On my drive home today from work, there were a series of tones (ding, ding) - maybe 10 times - that sounded and then they ceased. No messages appeared on the DIC. Almost sounds like the signal you get when you have your key in the ignition and the door is open. However, the door was definitely closed and the gauges looked ok - the car rides normal.

Not a clue, When I get a warning there is always a message, Maybe your turn signal was on too long, It will ding for that.
Did you check and see if you have any codes? http://www.stengel.net/diccodes.htm

Well, I was at a stop light at the exit ramp of the freeway when this happened and the turn signal was on for a period of time - could that have caused the chimes ???

What is the procedure to pull the codes?
Thanks,
Mordi
I gave you a link on how to pull the codes above. http://www.stengel.net/diccodes.htm
If you have no current "C" codes drive it and don't worry. If you have a history code "H" that is something that happened and is no longer a prob.

If I recall right, the turn signal reminder comes on when the signal has been on for more than 3/4 mile. I don't think a time limit is used for the warning. Could be wrong, but it is covered in the owners manual.

Dont worry its perfectly normal.
You'll get a chime if the turn signal is left selected for any length of time. It's just a reminder. I had a particularly long off ramp in Vegas and it used to drive me mad until I worked it out.
EDIT:
Jack's absolutely correct, it is in the manual. Here you go:
Turn Signal on Chime
A chime will remind you if you leave the turn signal on
for more than 3/4 mile (1.2 km) of driving.
If you need to leave the turn signal on for more than
3/4 mile (1.2 km), turn off the signal and then turn it
back on.

I just finished watching the Corvette Z06 VHS owners manual and they said exactly what you said.
Drive over .75 miles with your turn signal left on gets you a ding, ding, ding.
