The HUD itself was NOT offered as an option on the FRC's in 1999 until very very late in the 1999 production year.
The actual IPC's installed in the FRC's were "HUD capable" approx mid-way through the production year, beginning somewhere in the approximate Feb/Mar time-frame.

Example: I ordered my FRC in Jan 1999. HUD was not available and not even offered as an option on the FRC's then. My car was built late March 1999 and I took delivery in April 1999. When I decided later to add HUD, I found that my IPC was "HUD ready".

My 99 FRC was built 10/28/98 (ten years old now!) and the Cluster in it was HUD ready...
Took me most of the day to do it, but I was more interested in the finished product than the time it took. I glued in Aluminum Bezel Rings at the same time. I am sooo happy I did it! The stock windshield works just fine! When I was shopping for my car I knew I wanted Torch Red, 6 speed and the HUD. I wanted zo6 but at that time they were 10-12k more than what I paid for my FRC. I found my car and it didn't have the HUD but I loved the car and the deal, so I bought it anyway. I was stoked when I found out here that you could add it and install it yourself! I got the projector and the switch from Gene Culley and the little harness off ebay if I remember right. Best mod you can do! Good Luck

I'll do my third HUD conversion this weekend. Got em down to about 2 hrs start to finish. Easy upgrade for those who were not blessed with it from the factory. I prefer to drill the hole to mount but its personal preference. Any parts you need for the conversion are easily found on fleabay. Pretty cheap too. Just a humble suggestion. And the non-HUD windshield will work just fine BTW.

If Lonestar has a tech tidbit to share, listen. He knows a thing or two about the C5 platform.

Good luck with the conversion. You're gonna love it.

My BEST friend Nom (FactoryRaceCar) put HUD in my 99 coupe in April of this year with some help from Oak (Oaks99) and my husband (MR.WaynesWorld) . Nom is a MASTER at this and I LOVE my HUD especially since I didn't think I would like it at all. And no you do not need a different window.. Here are a few pics for you

Well photbucket just decided to do some freakin site maintenance on me so I will post a few more pics for you later and I will find some that have the HUD being used after the install. But trust me---you will love it Too bad you don't have someone like Nom there to help. He was moving like a mad man and it came out PERFECT

Does anyone know how to fit HUD into my '97? A forum member once offered an up grade kit, but has since quit. Build date 4/97.

aside from the projector, dash bezel and 11 pin harness, you will also need a new HUD capeable gauge cluster.

all the parts are easily found at any major swap meet these days, or on fleabay....

I installed HUD in my '98 and I LOVE it!

If don't have the HUD then you don't have the cable..so make sure you get the connecting cable from the display to the HUD projector. Simple installation.windshield as is works fine....only trouble with the whole set up is POLAROID SUNGLASSES....they almost eliminate the hud display other sunglasses are OK...

So fare I have gotten every thing for the conversion including a complete dash out of an 18K Z06 W/HUD for $160.

I think I am doing good finding deals just going to have to keep looking for the HUD switch

Thanks for the additional info and photos. Unless my brother comes here I'll wait until spring for the install. Iowa salt, road sand, and 160 mile round trip to my brother's house force me to wait for spring. I believe I have all of the parts ready to go, thanks to forum members.
