For my good grades and being a good son my father got me a C5Z three months ago....spoiled i know but i am humble about it. I have enjoyed the car VERY much so far. You may have heard the story but two days ago a trooper rear ended two young adults at high speeds. The young man is in a coma and possibly paralized from the neck down. The young woman has been released home but has severe pain.
My father is now extremely concerned..as is my mother about my safety. I dont know what the crash test ratings are for the C5Z but i know the car is made lightweight material so im not sure how safe it is. They say i can get the new challenger if i wanted, something as they said "stronger"
Please give me your honest opinion guys, much appreciated
The corvettes are very crash worthy. I have seen pics of a number of accidents that looked pretty bad and yet the driver was okay.
I am sure you know that the higher the speed the greater the impact. Just basic physics. Life is about risks. Just be careful and pay attention to what you are doing.
You sound like pop's will get you any car as long as it is safe. Don't get me wrong people.... but BMW makes some really nice rides that are smoking fast but extremely safe. I could see myself in a new M3 if someone else was footing the bill, but I do enjoy my Z. Like in a previous reply, speed out of control is lethal in any ride, but really fun on track days.
You should be watching in your rear view mirror even at stop lights and always aware of traffic around you in front & in back. Avoid anyone staying to the side of you and assume anyone just ahead of you in the next lane over WILL cut you off without a signal( give them room).
I was in an accident in my C4 caused by a 1-year old SUV in which both were totalled. This was a near head-on (30-45 deg angle) collision at 40mph. The car held up very well and injuries were minimal. The main issue is the size of the crumple zone--I feel a lot less safe in the wife's Neon than with a big V8 compartment up front.

The issue is not crashing at high speeds. I know that no matter what car i drive...it can be a srt4, M3, Z06...if i lose it at 140+ mph chances are not in my favor that i will survive. The issue is having a "normal" freak accident such as one at an intersection or something like that, and the car having a good chance at protecting me.
The guy who is in a coma was rear ended at 80 mph while he was stopped. His four door civic turned into half a car. Would it be any different with the vette?
Life is short but there is no need to make it shorter then it currently is.

There are sooo many variables to take in account that to factually say the vette would be better or worse would be untrue. I think if you are hit at 80mph there is a small chance of you walking away no matter what the car, short of maybe a huge truck or SUV. So unless you want to get a big *** truck or SUV i'd keep the vette.

Crash tests are measured in many ways, not just speed. The meaning of speed as I mentioned earlier is some cars crash better, not that you will be a repeat of the situation the family is concerned about. I was rear ended in 82 much like what you mentioned. I was stopped in traffic in the fast lane because the old man in front had a blowout and just slammed on the brakes and stopped right in the lane. guy behind me was estimated traveling at 75 MPH "while taking a picture" of Spanish Hills to his left in a full size truck. I was in a 79 Corolla, and ended up in intensive care with three broke bones in the back. He never touched the brake pedal let alone seen anything else. You will need to search for answers on rear-end collisions or any other type in a Vette, but I would assume our Z's have plenty of safety built in. I heart everyday from that day on and the best advice was earlier, try to keep an eye out all around, you never know.

I would think if you were rear ended in any vehicle by someone going 80MPH, chances are not going to be good for anyone involved.
That being said, I would keep driving the vette and not think about it any longer. My mother is a worry wort too and is on me all the time about my toys. I am 40 years old.

I agree with your parents... What you really need is a Peterbuilt or Kenworth..
However, if you want to be rebellious there is always the ford Pinto!!!
