Default Stock heads

I am thinking about porting/polishing my stock heads. Would like to know if anything will be gained or will it be a waste of time? Thanks,

Gene

depends on your other mods, my car gained 32rwhp porting the stock heads and doing a nice valve job on them(which is where about 1/2 the flow gain is)

Depends on WHO ports the heads. Just doing the porting yourself may not be a good idea.

Might be easiery just to buy a set of ported heads and cam combo.

Number of years ago we took my heads off. Did not port them per say but did polish or clean up the ruff edges. Put in new valves, and springs

Did it make a difference? A little I think. Cam made the real difference.

I forgot to mention I have 243 heads. I would not bother porting any of the other stock castings(besides possibly 5.3 heads if you're desperate). The others are too thin after porting and the rocker arm bosses are known to break off.

Thanks for the info, Viperbluelx and Tom (AU N EGL).Was talking to a friend, a machinist, and he said he had heard there was some HP to be gained in the LS6 heads. Offered to do the work as he has the time before he reworks his motor for the strip next year. Tom, I need a little more "Giddy-up and go" to use at the NCM event (VIR) next year.

YES there is, not always from used heads, but you never know

Now if want to take them off and polish or clean them up a bit, new valves, valves seats and new springs, go for it.

The only few head porters that get the most out of LS6 heads YES there are other head porters,

Now for more gitty up, just go with a smallish cam.

I run polished, not ported 243 heads, New springs each winter. had 921s this past year and they were too much so going back to 918s

Cam I run a 224/224 581/581 on 112+0, If i did it over again I would have gone 224/228 581/588 on 112+2 - However, there is something else in the works.

Other power adders, LTs and free flowing exhaust.

CAI clean filter, ( I clean my air filters after each weekend on the track. You be surprised how much dirt and crap is on them. I never oil my filers, just clean them.

Now no offense to really bust ppls bubbles, the fastest cars are stock LS6s with no engine modifications other then a tune and just suspension and new tires.

I know from experience that Cartek can work magic with the 243s. They offer different levels of head work and can match the heads to one of their custom cams. Their website shows the different levels www.cartek.com. Max at Cartek will answer any questions or concerns you may have. I have been completely satisfied with their products and support.

A 243 head that is ported properly, shaved accordingly, has the right valve job, and matched to a good cam will produce power levels close to AFR, Trickflow etc. for much less money.

Thanks to all for the info. Will have to decide exactly where I want to go with the car. Right now it dynoed at 385 rwhp. Don't want to get to radical with it.
