Default Gasoline smell

When I fill my '01 vert, I smell gasoline for several days. I don't fill past the "click-off" of the pump. Apparently, after the level goes down a little, the smell goes away. The odor is embarassing and it might even be dangerous.

Any other C-5 owners have this problem ?

Same problem on my 02 coupe. I posted about this last week (maybe two weeks ago) and got no suggestions. Let me know if you discover how to solve the problem.

I have a 2000 with the same problem. I read on here somewhere that the 'connector tube' between the left and right tanks sometimes begins to leak when the tanks are very full --- I guess when fuel actually is present in the connector tube for a long period of time. Since reading that I "almost" fill up everytime (I put in 7 gallons once the fuel gauge reads 1/2-full). Ever since doing that, no smell. My understadning is changing that tube is a huge ordeal ... dropping the tranny, etc. So, I'm going to keep doing it this way until I finally upgrade the tranny. Hope this helps.

The usual cause is the fuel filter leaking at the connections depending on the year of the car otherwise its the cross-over tube between the tanks and yes, its a pain to get too. But, you need to. Two reasons, 1) the system is pressurized and will cause codes as well as performance issues. 2) if you can smell gas, there's a real chance of it finding its way to the exhaust and I wouldn't want to be driving it when that happened.

The previous post about the fuel tank leak on the cross over is correct. I had the same problem that was fixed while it was under warranty. I own a 04 coupe and was told by the dealer that this is a common problem in the C5 models.

Interesting. This is the first I have heard of this problem. I guess just another quirk of the C5's.

There seem to have been a lot of fuel leaks recently. I took a look at the book and there are a few connections that could leak.

Start by examining the fuel filter connections next to the exhaust system.

The main fill pipe routes from the cap to the tank. There’s a connector at each end of the fill pipe. One of the early problems was slow filling and GM redesigned the fill pipe to get a better flow.

1. Fuel filler hose
2. Vent pipe

Next check the fuel sender, the aux fuel rear return pipe that connects the jet pump to the left tank and the aux fuel feed rear pipe that connects the left tank to the jet pump at the fuel sender. The FLVV hose routes to the EVAP canister. Finally the crossover pipe connects the two tanks but that’s at the top of the tank so I guess it would be hard to see from below.

1. Auxiliary fuel return rear pipe from the jet pump to the left tank.
2. Fuel return rear pipe.
3. Fuel feed rear pipe at the fuel sender

If the leak doesn't show until the tank is getting full that would be the time when the fuel is starting to fill the right tank via the crossover pipe. It may give a clue.

1. Left fuel tank EVAP pipe.
2. EVAP pipe quick-connect fitting.
5. Tank crossover hose

I've never looked in there so not sure how easy it will be to see all these connections but I'd guess you'd need to get the car up on a lift.

HTH

I have developed a fuel leak, almost in front of the left rear tire, maybe a little toward the center of the car, on my 97. I havn't had a chance to crawl under there yet. I noticed it today when I pulled it out of the garage for a wash. It seemed to leak mostly when engine was running and pretty much quit when I turned engine off. I'm wondering if I have the leaky fuel filter. I'll investigate the situation when time allows. For now it's just going to have to set until I can figure it out. I did a search on fuel leak and was lead to this thread.
