Default Horn Not Working

My horn in the 2000 vette doesn't work using either the steering wheel or fob - When I push the steering wheel, I just hear a clicking sound in the under the hood fuse box. If I use the horn button on the fob, the under the hoo fuse box just clicks and clicks (sounds almost like a blinker).

Any possible spots to check?

if the horn is not working at the steering wheel it is very expensive since the relay component is part of the airbag system.

sounds like the horn itself. if it was the airbag switch faulty, it will still work from the fob. I'll unplug the harness to the horn an see if you're getting power there when you press the fob

It's been a while since I've checked the fuse box of the vette, but a friend has a 99 Chevy Silverado, so I would assume the fuse box would be similar to a 00 vette (both being GM products). Same thing happened to him recently, turned out to be just a bad relay.

Anyways, is it possible you just have a blown relay switch? Check your fuses. Couldn't hurt.

Sounds like a fuse, or loose connection at the fuse box..

All great ideas - I did check fuse # 11 under the hood and swaped out the mini relay # 36 (also under hood) with another one

Any other easy checks I can do before jacking up front end to look at the horn connections and actual horn

Thanks

Check the connector at the horn and the horn contacts. Mine quit working. Found some corrosion in the above areas. Used some fine emory cloth to clean, replugged and they worked.

I assume you have the horn setting turned on in the DIC for it to beep when you hit the lock button on the FOB ?

Default Horn Questions

Is the location of the horn on the passenger side?

Is the best way to work on the horn under the car? If yes and memory serves me correctly, there is a 'trap door' to view the horn?

Are there two horns on the vette? If yes, do both horns need to be functioning or can just one horn be working in order to emit a sound?

Thanks for help

Theres only a single horn on the passenger side. You need to come at the horn through the front fascia closeout panel (this pic is the other side panel)

Heres the replacement procedure from the book:

Document ID# 656925
2002 Chevrolet Corvette
________________________________________
Horn Replacement
Removal Procedure

1. Remove the right front fascia lower closeout panel. Refer to Close Out Panel - Front Bumper Fascia Lower in Bumpers.
2. Disconnect the horn assembly electrical connector.

3. Remove the horn assembly bolt.
4. Remove the horn assembly from the skid bar.
Installation Procedure
1. Position the horn assembly to the skid bar.
Install the aligning tab on the horn assembly into the hole on the skid bar.
Notice
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
2. Install the horn assembly bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 25 N•m (18 lb ft).
3. Connect the horn assembly electrical connector.
4. Install the right front fascia lower closeout panel. Refer to Close Out Panel - Front Bumper Fascia Lower in Bumpers.

If you have fog lamps, swap the fog lamp relay with the horn relay. That will tell if th erelay is bad.

Default Update

So I'm getting power to the horn connector, but horn still don't work - I pulled out the horns, but unsure where to go from here

1) Shouldn't at least one of the horns works (either Low or High)?

2) Should I test each horn separately?

3) Can I test by using the car battery or is the a safer/easier way?

Thanks for the input

2000 Roadster - Hey I needed my horn last week and it did not work. I guess it has been several years sense I have used it.

Anyway in trouble shooting the problem, I got it back to the SIR package on the steering wheel. Pulled the module (this a bear) and could sound the horn from the steering wheel by by-passing the horn switches in the SIR pack. Then "ohmed" out the SIR pack and the swithces were good (thank you, thank you. Saved a bunch of money). Reattached the connectors and everything works.

There is a spring loaded sliding contact in the steering wheel that must have not been contacting well enough. I polished this contact and made a mental note to test the horn at least once a week on my cars from now on.

Just realized both my horns had stopped working..... of course right when I needed them. I followed the power to the horn and the horns didn't work so I removed and tested them. The horns worked. So I traced the ground up to the G102 chassis ground block. I remembered Bill Curlee's sticky at the top and took the plug apart. It was corroded. Cleaned everything up and now the horn works. If you lost both horns and the fuse and relay are okay, I would go for the ground. You can read up at >> http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...tion-long.html . I cleaned the G101 location too.... now it's on to the rest of them before problems arise.
