Default Over Heating

My friend has a 98 corvette that is over heating, I figured you guys might have an idea. He has full oil and fool coolant. He said that his light came on, and he opened his hood and coolant started to boil. Any ideas?

Could be a clogged radiator. Check to see if he has the orange Dexcool. This coolant if not properly checked can turn into sludge. Couls also be a stuck thermostat.

Another thing to check is the space between the radiator and AC. There is usually a nice build up of crap if you don't clean it out regularly. Best way to reach it is from underneath. Drive the car up a set of ramps and take a look. I clean the crap out (leaves usually on dude did pickup a frog) with a not too long thin stick. Dopn't poke at the radiator just go in a back and forth motion...wear safey eye wear.

Stock temps should be 200-225

Might also want to make sure that the electric fans are coming on. This can be done while the car is on the ramps checking for debris as well. I don't remember what the factory setting for the fans are but if I remember correctly the second fan doesn't usually come on until around 220 or so (I think you can get it to come on earlier if you turn on the air conditioner).

I'm sure some more knowledgable folks will show up soon. I changed my fan settings, radiator and wather pump early on so mine rarely ever gets above 180 as it is.

As noted above, I'd clean out the radiator space and check the thermostat, flush the radiator and refill and turn on the A/C the fans should come on at least one of them.

If a recall correctly, slow speed fan kicks on at 217 and high speed fan kicks on at 235.

I put in a 160 termostat and had my fans reconfigured to turn on earlier. I used to run at 220-225. Now I run at 170 - 180.

Spray brake dust cleaner on the radiator let it set for a mimnute and power wash it off and watch all the black dirt run down your driveway. It worked for me no problems since.
