Default Painted engine plastics question...

Has anyone ever painted their engine plastics that do NOT match the exterior color? I know of the chromes, stainless, or even flame theme. But what about a contrasting color? Just trying to get ideas....

Thanks!

I hate to be "that guy", but the flame theme under the hood is one of the worst/ugliest possible things you can do to your corvette short of driving it off a bridge.

I did a set a while back. This is actually a F*rd red. They are on Mrs. Patches' black C5. Nothing fancy, but that's how she likes it.

Contrasting paint colors, textures (wrinkle, smooth), platings, etc all add to make the engine compartment unique as your car...

Yes, it was the typical process of prep, coat, wet-sand, prep, coat, wet-sand, etc. I sanded on the raw frc's for quite a while to minimize the textured surface before applying the first primer coat. That way I didn't need any filler to smooth the finish out and didn't need to layer the coats as much to acheive the smoothness I wanted. The primer has a flex component and is meant for flexible pieces such as bumpers to prevent cracking. I didn't use any adhesive promoter, although it's probably a good idea.

Before

Upper is unsanded - lower, sanded

Ready for primer

Primered, wet-sanded and ready for color

Color coated, wet-sanded and ready for clear

Cleared, wet-sanded progressively up to 2000 grit and polished

It's important to take your time and guard against dirt/particulate and contaminant as much as possible, especially since you're doing it in a dirty environment rather than a spray booth (unless you rig up a temporary one). This is just my method - I am definitely an amatuer.

Thanks Patches! I thought about going fully smoothed (filling in the Corvette letters) and having 'Lowcash' airbrushed on the covers; but figured I'd start with 'baby steps'

I'd like to do something like this, but I know the limits of painting ability and artistic skillset.
