Default POLL: Do you like D-Type Steering Wheel for C5??

Hi Guys,

We are more active on C6 forum and rarely come to C5 forum so you may not be familiar with us yet.

Lately we introduce our beautiful Carbon D-Type Steering Wheel for C6 and get excellent response. We also get inquiry from some C5 customers.

We are thinking to make the D-Type Steering Wheel for C5 but we are not sure if C5 customers will be interested so we would like to run this poll. We like to hear your feedback.

The D-Type Steering Wheel is very sporty and more and more high end European sport cars are using it. Because we have to invest expensive mold then we use it to convert the stock C5 steering wheel to the sporty D-Type Steering Wheel, if we don't feel optimistic demand then it won't pay us to go for it.

The standard spec is---- Carbon on the top, left & right is perforated alcantara and bottom is solid alcantara.

If you like to have regular black leather instead of alcantara, we can make it for you too. If you don't want the carbon, we can make the whole wheel in alcantara or leather.

Since we don't have D-Type Steering Wheel for C5 yet, so we can only use the C6 D-type Steering Wheel to show you the concept.

Because C5 steering wheel has 4 spoke, so it will still have the 4 spoke but the bottom will be horizontal to ground so it will look like "D" shape. Please use some imagination.

Here are some C6 D-Type Steering Wheel pictures for your reference. Please let us know your opinions.

so its basically the C5 steering wheel but in carbon/alcantara and bottom is like a D?
personally if it looks anything like the stock wheel, I wouldn't like it very much. But if it looks more like a C6 then I would love it.

I think the big issue with the C5 wheel is its looks, the huge size and the thin grip. If we could have a different wheel, I think a lot of people would go for it. I can’t speak for others but I wouldn’t be interested in just having my C5 wheel re-upholstered.
I want a different, thicker wheel with a smaller diameter.

BTW, great job on the C6 wheel.

There is a market for a better wheel. But in order to be a success, the following things should be met.

*smaller diameter
*thicker rim
*installs like stock
*retains airbag
*high quality
*looks good

We can satisfy all the criteria except "smaller diameter". Yes, we can make it to be smaller but then we have to deal with airbag issue.

We don't want to make new airbag to fit with the new steering wheel. It will be too costy to make new airbag with limited demand.

I don't know if you guys are familiar with the Mercedes AMG style. It will be thicker, more sporty, with grip, comfortable ...etc. If we go with that route then we can satisfy most of these requirements except smaller ring.

Thanks for the thumb up.

We will look further into it to see if we can somehow reduce the diameter and at the same time we can reuse the airbag. It's a tough compromising job.

I don't think we can make the 3 spoke for C5 due to the airbag.

What about using an airbag from the C6 wheel?

In this case, you will still have to buy the C6 airbag from GM and it will cost you about $500-$600 (I guess) and then do some custom wiring. I think you probably won't like to mesh around with the airbag.

I am very interested and I think there will be more interested people than you can imagine if the diameter is smaller (plus the 'D' shape).

One suggestion - see what it takes to modify the C6 steering wheel frame to fit the C5 steering column. If there is a difference in the airbag connector, that will not be a big deal to rewire or modify.
I have worked on airbags for years and the wiring is actually very simple. I would purchase a new or used C6 steering wheel (or any other smaller diameter, good-looking steering wheel) in a hearbeat that could be modified by someone to fit a C5.

I'm intrested. Your C6 wheel looks great. I would have to see the finished product, but if it comes out as nice as the C6 version I'd do it.

I think if you could reduce the diameter, even just an inch or so, it would really be in demand. I would prefer a smaller diameter over making the rim thicker. For me, on the stock wheel there's more than enough space between the rim and the air bag to comfortably grip it, so I'd think you could make a wheel with slightly shorter spokes and a decreased diameter that would still fit around the stock air bag.

We will try our best to reduce the diameter. It seems this is the most common complaint from C5 customers. I didn't know about this issue before.

I too, think a smaller diameter would be the single best thing you could do. I've noticed that the stock wheel certainly qualifies as "gi-normous". If I were to switch to a sportier steering wheel, ALL OF IT needs to be sportier. Diameter included. Good luck, I'd love to see this come to fruition!

I would love a thicker, slightly smaller diameter wheel in all alcantara. I don't care if it is 3 or 4 spoke or if it is a D shape or round. I would buy either one.
