Default 2000 c5 Optima Battery Issue

I bought a brand new Optima red top Model - SC34U for my 2000 C5 Vette. When I try to start it nothing happens. If I take off the connection and reconnect it sometimes it will then kick over and start.

I just got a brand new motor, Alternator, Starter, and now this is the new battery. Did I buy the wrong one?

It won't even try to kick over. Then if I unhook and reconnect the battery it works the first try. But once you turn it off, even if its right after you start it you have to do the unhook setup again.

that's a different kind of problem - are there any dash lights that look different between when it will start and when it won't? Can you pull the DIC codes to see if there's any clues in there?

Have you checked the ground cable connection? It sounds like the other end may not be tight. chassis ground connections can and do corrode. See

for more info.

Very strange?

Might Double check your Optima Model Number... I am not familiar with that Model Designation SC34U?

I have had two Red Tops in my 2001 - the first one did not show a Model Number, but it was a 75/35 - CA-910, CCA-720, RC-90

I just installed a new Red Top last summer (preemptive maintenance)... it shows to be Model No. 7586DT. It is also a 75/35 and all the other specs listed above are the same.

the model number is not familiar to me too. Do a search and the majority of people with Red Tops have the same model #

Here is my current battery (ignore the auxiliary terminals I added to the top and the battery terminal wrench)...

Looks like you got the right one - Optima Red top Battery (12v SC34U Group 34/78).

Are your battery cables OK - the early C5 batteries had a habit of leaking (pos terminal) - sometimes the acid got into the cables. I am really reaching here, but you do have a unique problem...

I had a similar problem after I installed my red top. Periodically it would not start, would not even take a charge. I had it tested and it tested fine. What I did was clean the battery cable terminals real good and make sure the battery connection is good and clean also. Once I did that I had no problems. Just my two cents.

I had a explorer with the same kind of problem. It turns out that the battery cables were corroded inside. From the outside they looked perfectly fine, once we figured out what it was replaced the cables and it worked perfectly until the day I traded it. Have you tried replacing the cables? You may be just temporarily making a good connection when you take the cables on and off.

35 years ago I had the same problem . the volt meter would show voltage, but was dead when i hit the starter or would not start . it was oxidation . sounds like you need new cables because you can't see inside the insulation like i couldn't an this will cause the intermitent or phantom voltage you are having . good luck . duane # 122540 born 3-6-00
