Filled up with gas and then went to put gas cap back on and it will not tighten. It barely makes the ratchet noise while turning and just comes back off the hose bib in my hand. I have never heard of such a problem. Anyone else have this happen and is it fixable? Or do I have to go to the stealership to get a new one? It is a 2004 Lemans Edition Vert.

Now do not flame me but is this part called a "filler cap"? Looked up at GM parts house and based on the illustration, it looks as though it is called the filler cap. Maybe I should have prefaced this that I am a female Corvette Owner and I am not so mechanically inclined as many of you are.
And what causes a gas cap to go bad anyway? Never heard of such a thing.

Yup Filler Cap
There is a plastic ring inside the cap that goes bad. It's a week part known for failure.
It will be an easy replacement to, so no real mechanical ability will be need to replace it.
Good to hear that this can malfunction. Stealership, HA! I just paid $47 for a part from the dealer that I found similar aftermarket part for $3.60. Could not find it for my application though, so they got my money. Bastards.
