Which is better? On a stock Z.

Leave the stock air box on..you will not gain enough by messing with it to make it worth the risk of inducing extra dirt into your engine if the ties to not form a good seal.

He's not asking about $300 intakes I like the flip-tie. It's not that difficult and it looks like it would draw in a good amount of air theoretically.

I did the flip tie mod on my Z. I didn't notice a seat of the pants improvement. I don't have ET or MPH gains, so I would hate to guess.

Some say it's worth .1 and 1mph. I did notice and increase in dirt on the filter, and it would get soaked after a shower or heavy rain. I'll be putting the stock air box back on the car. Not worth it IMO.

Go with an aftermarket filter or ram air.

Cut the airbox from the original opening down all the way and to both straps--block sides with cell foam as to not let any engine heat in--worth at least 5-10 ponies and you will feel it---draws only outside air from the front air screens--water safe also

Check out the fast list. I believe there are some very quick times with the zip tie mod. It works.

You can cut more holes in the stock air box lid. Just don't cut the original slot lower. That is where water leaks through the hood seem where it meets the nose section. I cut mine and ran some flex tube to it from the front screens. Home made, poor mans Varam idea. Cost me about $10. A new lid is not that expensive. Put a K&N filter in the box. With the lid cut it still seals the filter tight in place.

If you do the zip tie mod. I used safety straps. They have velcro locks and are flat. So they wrap around the box and hold the filter snug. Zip ties kinda bothered me that the filter might lift in some place and suck dirt right through.

Paying $300 for a CAI just cracks me up. What a waste of money.

I did the zip tie mod last year. Then I changed it to the flip-tie mod and SAW a reduction in throttle response and overall power. Car just felt lazy. Maybe the flip tie mod needs some MAF tuning to work properly?? Anyway installing a Vararam in a couple weeks.

zip tie mod is cheap and works, as long as you don't drive your car in the rain.

Have to agree with this... you have 405 (probably a bit more) horses at the crank, and you want to risk damage to the engine to add 5 unproven horsepower -- less than a 2% gain? Better tires will probably do more for ya by putting down more of the power you already have.

I don't see how anyone can think that the guys that come up with the air box mods are wiser and have done more thorough testing than the folks at GM? They are just out to make a buck with their silly marketing gimmicks.

If they sold one of these things with a naked chick on 'em, then I'd maybe buy one and hang it on my wall.
