Need some help with DIC message

Default Need some help with DIC message

Driving along to work today and got the following message Service Tire Monitor Sensor. When I check the guages it shows the following for the tire pressure on the Right Rear Tire "RxxxxPSI", all the other tires display correctly ex: L 30 PSI. My guess is that the tire sensor is bad. (My vette is an '04 so its going on 5 years old, thinking that the battery in the sensor has expired) Has anyone else gotten this message and was it only the sensor? Or could it be something else.

Also if it is the sensor as I suspect, and I have the place that mounts my tires replace it (really don't want to go to the stealer) can someone tell me or point me to the link that tells how to reprogram the tire sensors? I know I read it in here somewhere but can't remember where. I knew I should've printed it out when I saw it.

To reprogram your C5 Tire Pressure Sensors takes just a few steps:
  1. Turn ignition to ON position.
  2. Press the DIC RESET button to clear any warning messages.
  3. Press the DIC OPTIONS button until the display goes blank.
  4. Press and hold the DIC RESET button for 3 seconds.
  5. Press the DIC OPTIONS button again until the “TIRE TRAINING” message appears.
  6. Press the DIC RESET button until the message, “LEARN L FRONT TIRE” appears.
  7. Hold the magnet on the base of the parts tray over the pressure sensor’s location on the LEFT FRONT wheel (this should be next to the valve stem if installed correctly).
  8. When the horn beeps, programming is complete for that wheel.
  9. Program the other 3 wheel sensors as directed by the message display. The sequence is as follows: Left Front, Right Front, Right Rear, Left Rear.

Sounds like a bad sensor to me. Try reprogramming it using the above procedure first, and if it fails to work (you will have to reprogram all four sensors), then get a new sensor. A competent tire shop should be able to change the sensor out for you. Good place to get the sensor is gampartshouse.com.

Alooha, JD, Thanks for the help/info. Sounds like something I should be able to do but I've got one more dumb question that maybe you can help me with....What kind of magnet do I need (how strong) and where can I get one?

Its always worth trying a reprogram first

My bet is a dead sensor battery and Gene does a great deal on sensors

As it turns out I didn't need a new sensor ... it just needed to be re-set.

Just in case anyone is wondering I used a 13lb magnet from Ace hardware the lesser capacity magnets, which I bought and tried first, just didn't work. The one from Ace looks just like the GM specialty tool # J41760 except the diameter of the hole in the top is smaller. Cost about $10.00.

If your battery is marginal, it may not be strong enough to sync up in the morning, or when it is cold, but as it warms up a little it then does sync up. Also, if one TPS sensor battery goes south, the others will (most likely) not be far behind.

The instructions above do allpy to all C5 years.

The magnet I use is one that is designed to pick up loose screws and nails, like you'd find in most home supply or hardware stores. The magnet itself is a little larger diameter than a hockey puck, but only half as thick as one.
