Default Hood Liner

Ok guys/gals, I need some input. I am torn between having my hood liner C5 logo painted, or to order a decal. I believe painting is the way to go, however, I am not certain of the cost. I am not looking for something fancy but I want a real clean looking emblem. Though, I realize I have to make the ultimate decision, I was hoping that members of the forum could give me some help on the pros and cons of each.

Thanks,

Gary

Hi Gary, I would say if all you really want to do is colorize the logo that is embossed in the hood liner, it seems that many folks find that buying a few dollars worth of paint, and spending a few hours filling it in yeilds very nice results. I personally would hesitate to try the decal approach - decals hanging upside down over a hot engine would seem to invite problems with the glue softening, with the decal ending up melted over the engine. I know several people have the decals and are happy with them, but I'd vote for painting too.

There have been plenty of posts here on painting the hoodliner yourself - not hard to do, just a little time consuming. It's going to obviously be the cheapest way to do it too.

If you want someone to do it for you, I would recommend forum member PaulaH. She does excellent work and can paint just about anything you come up with for a design.

I painted mine myself and it turned out pretty good. I just wanted something simple anyways. Here is what mine looks like.

If you do decide to go with a decal, don't go with a cheap one. I bought a cheap one on ebay, followed all the directions, cleaned the hood pad well and the first time I drove the car after I put it on the heat from the engine caused it to come off.

Default hood liner emblems

I have painted many hood liners for my corvette friends locally; not trying to start a business. I have seen the emblems that stick on and don't; they probably were not installed correctly. You can buy the hood liner with the emblem already installed, from Chevy accessories division. There are also embroidered versons out that are very nice. It all depends on the look you want and how much you want to spend. I usually charge $125 for painting C5 hoodliners. I'm sure you could do it yourself or find someone to do it for you. Good luck.

I painted mine myself with the Testor paint pins, although it looked ok, I was never satisfied. If you clean the liner and put on a fresh coat of black paint you can do it yourself. Just take your time. I ended up cleaning the liner and putting on a new coat of flat black paint. I order a decal from RIP, (a vendor on thios forum) and it looks 100% better then my painted version. I have not had any problem with it.
If you want it painted, Paula is the person to contact, she does great work.

I was thinking of doing this same sort of thing. I ended up taking my liner off and tore it a little. Liked the look of no liner and I am going to have a local body shop base/clear the underside for me in torch red for 225 dollars.

My only concern is if I do it and it turns out terrible, then what? I am
not saying I am not able to do it myself, it's just getting the nerve
to tackle something I have never done before.
Many have mentioned Paula. How would on get in touch with her?
I might want to reach her once I make up my mind.

Is is no big deal if you mess up or do not like the final results, a quick coat of black spray paint and your handed work is gone.
