Default Rear speaker question

I would like to upgrade my rear speakers. I was thinking of going with the JL Audio brand 5.25" coaixles. They are 2 5/16" deep and the tweeter protrudes 1/4" above the rim. Will they fit my 99 hardtop? Will the factory grills be reusable?

What Size speakers will fit in the rear location.

You can fit 5.25” speakers in the rear of the c5 frc or vert and 6.5" for the coupe.

Most Coax speakers will fit. The problem area on the rears is the drivers side because of the refuling line. If you can't get it perfectly flush, you can use a speaker ring spacer to give you clearance. I did this wit my SPX 177rs on my coupe but i had to use a 3/4" spacer to fit mine.

I'm curious what you're using for the front...

Wanted to know the maximum depth allowable before purchace. I've read "audio facts ' several times but don't recall exact rear speaker depth and didn't feel like reading that book again, thanks. Just thought someone would know offhand.

I was going to try rear speakers and then maybe a sub before removing door panels. Can't really hear front speakers anyway as they're down at my feet and my leg covers one of them.

I installed some 5-1/4" JL525XR's in my 2004 Z06 and had to use a 1/2" ring because of the drivers side. I ended up making them using a circle jig I bought for my Rotozip tool. You have plenty of room from the speaker face to the grill and trim panel, it's the speaker magnet that will give you the fit issues. Hope this helps

Did you notice a big difference changing the rear Bose for aftermarket speakers?

Not huge but it was definitely an improvement. I had Alpines in the rear and 3-1/2" in doors with stock system and it was ok. I eventually spent about $4k and put top of the line Eclipse and JL Audio gear in and I can say there is no comparison
