Hello I have just recently purchased a 1999 hardtop.I love the way it drives and handles.I had a 1992 coupe before and I was told not to get the engine wet because of the optispark distributor. This made washing the motor very time consuming. What I was wondering was if there was any problems that could arise from washing the motor on the 1999 model and if yes what were they? Any help with this would be very much appreciated. Thanks rks959
Never a good idea to wash todays engines. Too many electrical connections/grounds to get soaked and corrode.
If you MUST wash it, spray it with a diluted solution of simple green and water(50/50 mix), let sit for a few minutes, and rinse off with hose. I wouldn't spray it with a power washer. Blow it dry with compressed air, or leaf blower.
Check over in the car care section. That's where the pros hang out. They'll be able to give you more info.
Congrats on your FRC! Now, where's the pics at dude?
I will say that I've seen probably 1,000+ LS1/2/6/7 engines pressure washed (worked at a Corvette-only dealership) when they came in for resale... it was just part of the cleaning routine.... not one ever had an issue.
LT1/4 engines are a different story, the wash guy did that the same way as the others and once in a while it would hurt the opti... they ended up running the car for a full day idleing to let the opti warm up/burn off the moisture inside when they had issues.
