Find out if any of the three different Chevy column lock fixes have been applied. All of them are suspect. If the car had a CLB you would not be having this problem.
How can I found out if one of the fixes has been applied? What's a CLB?
I'll try taking one of the cables off.
To see if one of the column lock fixes have been done by a Chevy dealer get someone get the GM service record for your car. If you know someone working in the service department at any GM dealership they can do it for you. If not post and ask on this forum and perhaps someone will get it for you. CLB is a column lock bypass. The column locks in these cars have a propensity to fail. When they do it can strand you with a locked up steering column that will not release. All of the fixes that GM has come up with to fix the defect have pretty high failure rates and when they fail they can also strand you. Get a CLB and install it yourself and be done with the problem. Read the very long sticky on Column locks at the top of C5 forum.

I got the dreaded message when my OE battery died but was given a second chance once I put in a new battery. It probably takes more time to read the sticky than it does to install the column lock bypass.
The battery in my 03Z is croaking and I got the "Service Column Lock" message. I have COH CLB on the way and plan to replace the battery.
I'm also getting a battery tender as I am tired of the dead battery syndrome week after week. Sadly, the vette is not a DD as I have a work car that I'm required to drive.
Oh well, pretty easy fixes all things considered (knocks on wood) so I forsee a weekend project or two ahead!
