Default Problems with Blackwing!

I recently bought a 99 frc and it already had a blackwing installed on it. The only problem is the previous owner has got it electrical taped or something to the mass air unit. Im afraid to take it off cause I dont think it will seal again. The blackwing unit opening is much larger than the mass air is big if that makes any sense. I thought all blackwings fit 97 to 00 without needing a coupler. Whats crazy is that shouldnt it be reversed if the mass air isnt stock. I mean if the previous owner put a 01 up mass air on then the blackwing opening should be to small not to big. Did Slp use to make 2 different size blackwings. I really dont know what to do. Do I order a new intake or is there a fix for this?

Are you talking about a hose connection? The MAF sensor is strictly electrical. Maybe a picture would help. You may be missing a rubber grommet.

That is pretty scary. Sounds like he had the wrong coupler, but with the above -- pics would help.

I just installed a Blackwing on my 01, there is a rubber gasket for the 97-00 cars that seals the MAF into the filter neck. For 01 and up the MAF is the same size as the filter neck so a coupler is used to butt them together.

Ill get some pics today. I bet Im missing that rubber piece that slides on the mass air. If it came off a 01 up then it wouldnt have the rubber piece correct? Where can I get the rubber piece to fix this? Thanks for the input!

Have you tried any of the site supporting vendors yet? That's the column to the left.

Try ZIP PRODUCTS, PFYC, SLP ("Blackwing" distributor) to start...

The blackwing usually comes with a black connector to hookup to the MAF. You can get one, or just put the stock filter back on. I never felt the blackwing made much of a difference vs stock.

You probably just need a correctly sized coupler.

If you really want to "wake up" a Blackwing, feed it cold outside air, either by coring out the fog light covers or by cutting the lower radiator cover and installing a screen and scoop combo. My procedure for doing this can be found here:

http://www.conceptualpolymer.com/Rad...op%20inst..pdf

Not having a cold air inlet will guarantee a drop in HP (up to 10 RWHP)during slow-moving and stop & go conditions. The only downside to CAI is having to clean your filter more often.

What you probably need is the oem style "seal and clamp" shown in these instructions. It's the slip on rubber seal that has a different size ID on either side and is secured with a single stainless worm clamp.

From the SLP website...

Okay, looking at the pics of the white 99 there I see the black rubber piece connecting the mass air to the filter. I dont have that. Mine is just the hard plastic filter neck taped to the mass air unit. A 01 up coupler wont help. I need that piece of rubber along with that clamp that came with the filter to begin with. Can I get just that part or do I have to buy a new filter?
