I have two 2000 Corvettes The first one I bought in April of 2005 and the second I bought after it was totaled in March of 2008. I picked up the latter as a parts car for a GTM Supercar.
Anyways I have them parked next to eachother for the first time and I was curious if this was the first time the two had ever been together or if they maybe rolled off the line at the same day (Unlikely I know)
So i copied both down and hit the 'net to see what I could find.
From the Vin's on both I have figured that they were numbers:
Any GM dealer can inquire the GM Vehicle Inquiry System (GM VIS) for your cars' service history and build information, if you can just get them to. (You might find it best to ask someone in the dealer's service department.) The build information portion of the GM VIS inquiry will show your cars' build date. Also, several members here on the Forum have access to GM's VIS. If you can't get your local dealer do this, start a new post requesting a GM VIS history/build info inquiry for your cars and include their VINs in the post. Hopefully one of these members will come along shortly and run this for you.
Also, before someone here posts a link or directs you to the C5 Registry website, here's some info you should know. One cannot determine their car's actual Build Date or number off the line using the info from the C5 Registry website. The information as presented at this website is very misleading and people tend to take all sorts of info away from this site that simply is not there. For accurate build date information you need to refer to the GM VIS for your cars
You can also purchase your car's build sheet and window sticker from the Corvette Museum. The build sheet has the exact date and time of day your car left the line
Jim can you enlighten us by clarifying if the C5 Registry information is plain wrong or what exactly are the misleading areas? I'm sure we'll all appreciate your input. DD
OK, as long as we're talking build dates - explain this one.
The date at the top of my build sheet (replica from the NCM) says 12/16/99. The C5 Registry shows the build was started on 1/12/2000 (Wed.) and the GM VIS shows a build date of 1/14/2000 (Fri.). The December date is way off from the sequential VIN numbers, so is that the order date?

The build sheet is a very nice piece of documentation to have, especially for the Corvette enthusiast. However, the build sheet will NOT tell you the build date/time for one's car. Keep in mind, the build sheet is produced sometime prior to the build start and accompanies the car down the assembly line as it is being built. There is a machine printed date and time at the very top right and this is the only printed date and time that appears on the build sheet. I asked Adam Boca, the NCM Events and Vendor Coordinator, some time ago if he knew or could find out about the significance of this printed date and time. Adam's reply was that it is the projected production date and not the car's actual build date. Most people will find this printed date to be a number of days prior to their car's actual build day. In the case of our car, the printed date on its build sheet is 13 days prior to the car's build date.
Again, for accurate build date information on your car, you need to refer to the GM VIS.

Dave,
As for the C5 Registry website, note the disclaimer at the top of the first page for each model year that states: "Numbers Reflect Start Of Production Day". This information came from and was originally posted (but no longer) at the assembly plant's website, http://www.bowlinggreenassemblyplant.com/. The assembly plant website used the following disclaimer when they first posted this info: "Vehicle Identification Numbers are taken at the start of General Assembly Trim Department." Thus, the information at the C5 Registry website really only shows the VINs that started through the Trim Department that day, NOT the ones that actually came off the assembly line or had that day as their build day. (The definition of build date that I've most often seen is the date that the car was first started and was able to run/move under it's own power.) Although many people here may find their car's actual build day to be one or two production days after the date shown at the C5 Registry site, I've seen some build dates that were two weeks or more after the date shown on the C5 Registry website, especially when this date was just prior to the start of a vacation break at the plant.
Again, GM VIS will show your car's actual build date.

See my replies #10 (for explanation of date/time on the build sheet) and #11 above. Your car's actual build date is that shown on the GM VIS inquiry.

Thanks Jim! an excellant explaination, and you're absolutey correct . C5 Registry "Numbers Reflect Start ( in RED letters, dah) of Production Day".
Interesting that my '01 Z06 has a 'start' or projected date of June 18th 2001 but now it may actually be one of the last of the 2001 production year. I'll have to check that out with the GM VIS. Just think ' the last 2001 Z06' . Wonder if I could get the Speed Channel to do a special on it?
dieseldave56 - Having been built in June 2001 is indeed late. How close to the last VIN (135627)are you? I am not sure when the last Z06 was produced. I tried fionding the information on C5 registry ... does anyone know if that is member only area? I'd like to find the date on the registry ... and will check with my local dealers as well. I am #126896.
