I have a 98 convertible (bought July 08) and I think it has a new top from a previous owner. There is a black cloth that covers the rear area under the rear window with the top up. This cloth does not fasten anywhere other than the sides of the top and so it blows around or flaps up and down under the rear window when riding with top up and windows down.
I cannot image it was engineered this way and I cannot find anything posted on this forum or the owners manual that describes it. Anyone else have this condition and or correction? My wife suggests I velcro it the the body but I hate that kind of modification.
And I'll be the first to say, if the windows are down, the top should be as well.
Absolutely. In fact, one of the worst things you can do for any ragtop is drive at higher speeds (above 30 MPH) with the top up and the windows open. The air that circulates through the cabin puts upward pressure on the top expanding it and causing it to loosen over time.
I've seen this on many late model Mustangs, Firebirds and Camaros where the top has a bubble curve vs. a flat profile.
My Top is the same way. It will flap with the Windows down and Top up. There are several times I have driven with the Top up and Windows down. Especially if it is just a very short trip.
The top is only for temporary protection when you are caught out in a rain shower. The top is not meant to be used as a roof like the FRC top. It should be kept in the folded and stowed position at all times.
I store my windshield sun shade up there. It is the corvette sun shade you see advertised. Made of thick cardboard which holds flapping to a minimum. I hadn't thought of the wind pressure being that great to cause bubble topp. Pause for thought.
