I have Royal Purple in my rear end, trans and engine. Seems to be pretty good stuff. Kinda pricy and hard to find at your normal outlet stores and auto parts stores. I just bought 7 quarts of RP 5W30 and a mobil 1 filter the other day and it was around $80.

Here is the list of oils that have actually been proven to meet the GM4718 spec. http://www.gm.com/corporate/responsi...ngine_oils.pdf Any of these will be "good" oils.

Also, I understand that Valvoline now has an oil that has been approved since this list was posted.

As long as the bottle says, "Meets or Exceeds" the GM4718 spec you're good to go. If it only says, "Recommended"-------well, "Run Forest, run!"

*sigh* Do we have to rehash this again? Search is your friend on this topic; there have to be about 5 million threads all with a) the same advice and b) the same internet "experts" touting opinions as facts.

Bottom line:

1. Buy a good oil that meets the mfgr's spec.
2. Change oil and filter often.
3. Go drive your 'Vette!

Hmmm...one vendor's test says that another vendor's product isn't up to spec. I can't find the details of the test referenced - can you? Interestingly, I also didn't find it on the Valvoline web site, although I did see some claims that again had no back-up. And the claim applies to one test, Sequence IVA, which appears to apply solely to cold start scenarios for overhead cam engines (?) I'm still doing a bit of research, but in the end without the full test it's kind of a blind process.

So before we go off on a tanget, a posting of a letter on the internet is hardly conclusive. If someone can find the full study, then let's have a look and see what's there.

It comes from the cheapest vendor this month!!

Does their bottle say that it MEETS the 4718 spec or is it just RECOMMENDED for where the 4718 spec is called out??

Mobil 1 is the factory fill for the Corvette, true enough - that doesn't mean that it's best. Mobil Oil spent a fortune with GM to get them to use it as a factory fill. There are many high quality synthetics available - pick one, use 5W-30 per Chevrolet recommendations, and go with it.
Ta-Da! End of discussion. Move on!!!
