I have already a file pretty complete on the subject...and I share with the members here my experiences (ref e.g. my Threads).
Be sure that the search button is a "tool" I deeply recommend to every one new here around.
A file is never too much updated and all piece of information is precious to avoid mistakes.
I am sure you will contribute to educate me on this item and your knowledge about how to weld the aluminium barrels is welcome.

Lighten up partner I wasn't even talking to you. Even using your logic, you can bring an old thread to the top.
I read a magazine article about upgrading a C5 to wider tires. They said that you could go 18x9.5 fronts with 275/35R18 and 19x11 in the rear with 325/30R19. The front wheels had a 57mm offset and the rears had a 64mm offset. These sizes fit flush with the fender. Hope this helps.
The ideal fit is having the tire inside the lip, not flush. If lowered, and hit a pothole/curb etc. you would make contact with the fender possibly cracking it. 11'' for a 325 is the minimum squeeze!
If you're spending the money on custom wheels, and you want biggies, do it right the first time...tub it, or L5 flares. Tires sticking out looks cheezy, and looks like you borowed them! Hey it's my car, and I wouldn't be seen like that...unless I had a 'Wheelskin' on my SW.

You would have to be pretty low (aftermarket bolts low) and have a pretty wide tire in order for the tire to rub and crack the fender. But at that point handling is compromised anyway so I doubt that a person like that is concerned with anything more than ‘looks’ to be worrying about how wide of a tire can I squeeze under the car on stock wheels for that matter.
305/35-18 for the practical fit but 315/30-18's are fine on the stock 18x10.5 wheels. It's best to check the tire manufactures specs before buying tires to be on the safe side though.
random question, Would it be possible to put a nitto drag radial 315/35/17 on the front tires, and put them on the back, just for the strip?
I can get that nitto used VERY cheap, and I still have the stockers, looking for a cheap drag solution if possible, and I know the nitto runs a little small.

315/35-17 belongs on a 17x11 wheel if you want it to sit square. Autocrossers squeeze them on 17x9.5 rims and get away with it. For drag racing though it might be a problem. Low air pressure and the tire might slip around the rim. You'll have trouble getting a full contact patch with that tire on a narrow rim. For AX it works for some.
well the car is stock, and it would just be to get a little better 60 foot, Im not gonna be cluth dropping it at 5k. But if its a horrible idea, I wont do it.
