Default Headlight winking

After I shut off the headlights the left headlight pops up and stays there. Dealer reset actuator and worked for three cycles now does the same thing. Dealer now wants to replace the actuator. My faith in dealer is waining. Any ideas or sources for headlight actuator part.

Here's the TSB:

Number: 00-08-42-002
Subject: Left Headlamp Door Does Not Stay Closed (Shim Headlamp Door Motor/Actuator and Replace Insulators)
Model Year: 2000 Chevrolet Corvette
Condition: Some customers may comment that the left front headlamp door does not remain closed after the headlamps are turned off. Others may comment
that the left headlamp door closes when the headlamps are turned off, but then reopens. In either case, the right headlamp door operates properly.

Correction

Important

The following information applies to the left front headlamp door motor/actuator only. It does not apply to and should not be performed on the right front headlamp door motor/actuator.

Install one washer (2) between the left headlamp door motor/actuator (1) and the mounting bracket (3) at each of the three attaching bolt locations. Also replace the insulator (4) on each of the two mounting bracket travel stop tabs (5) as shown. For information on headlamp motor/actuator removal, see the Headlamp Motor/Actuator Replacement procedure in the Lighting sub-section of Body & Accessories in the appropriate Service Manual.

Pretty common problem.

I was about to follow the TSB posted above when I decided to dig around some more and found out that one of bolts in the linkage controlling the headlight door was almost completely backed out. It was this slop that was causing the arm to come down and break off the plastic insulator. I replaced the insulator, tightened the nut, and the problem has not come back. Didn't need to install any washers.

I tried the washer/spacers and insulators when it first happened and before going to the dealer. After installation the left light would not even open.

Dis assemble your headlight:

remove trim and cover. Manually raise and lower your headlight by twisting the exposed plastic cap of the headlight motor. (later model cars will have a rubber cap that covers this)

The headlight should lift completely up and come to a point where you cannot turn the motor cap anymore. going down it should do the same. If not, you'll need to check 2 places:

a) the headlight lifting arm where it attaches to the motor. Sometimes the 10mm nut that holds it on can come loose causing the light to not go up at all, go up then down or wink repeatedly like christi brinkley drove up in a red ferrari. Make sure this nut it tight. You can use a spring style lock washer to keep it from backing off if you'd like

b) There is a pin about 1/4" in diamater and about 2" long that is the pivot point for the headlight arm where it attaches to the headlight frame. Ensure this pin is secure.

good luck
