Default C5 Tire Questions

I would welcome some advice and feedback from some C5 owners. I have a stock '98 Sliver Sebring Metallic coupe with less than 22,000 miles that I've owned for about a year and a half. It needs new tires. I've been planning on Michelin Pilot Sport All Season Plus Zero Pressure tires. The best prices I've found are $944.00 which doesn't include mounting and balancing (add approx. $112 for road hazard protection). I also found these tires locally for $1,194 out the door (add $132.50 for free replacement certificates).

Since my auto insurance has 24/7 roadside assistance. I'm leaning towards going without the EMT tires. That being said, I'm looking for great all-season performance tires that are going to stand up to daily driving with good tread wear for at least 30,000 miles, preferably $40,000+ miles.

And recommendations. Thanks.

I would go away from the run flats. You will experience a quieter and smoother ride with improved handling and traction with a non run flat set up. Get a mini compressor, plug kit and lug wrench with a small scissor type jack. Carry a AAA card as a back up.

As far as the tires go. Many feel that the Michelin Pilot Sports are the best. A tire with almost as good a performance for a lot less money is the Bidgestone RE050A. Going away from the run flats opens up a lot of very good choices.

Where's the best place to purchase a small scissor jack? All I've found have been the big ones. Thanks.

I would go with KUMHO run flats...for me, they are suprisingly quiet and were reasonably priced. I have 18's in the back and 17's in the front...got them for less than 1K.

Just my opinion.

You could go with Kuhmo non-runflats, and a can of fix-a-flat or 12v compressor and plug kit (like the ZO6 standard equipment), and save many bucks, have a quieter ride, and probably never have to call a tow truck, which would be paid for by the money you save. Just my opinion....

Thanks for the tips. Several local Vette owners have been recommending I move away from the run flats. I'll look into the Bridgestones. Thanks.

I've been hearing good things about Kuhmo. I'll check those out too.

I appreciate the Kuhmo tip. Although I have to admit, it seems a little strange to put Korean tires on the Great American Sports Car. lol. But since I was stationed in Korea, I guess it makes sence. lol. Thanks again.

i switched to dunlop sp sport maxx's, they aren't run flats and i immediately noticed a huge difference compared to the stock goodyears. the dunlop's are grippier, quieter, better riding and also work well in the rain.

I had used them on my C4 and recently put a set on my C5. They are a great all-season tire and are very cheap. Handling and ride are excellent; I even feel safe in up to about 3" of snow.

Wear was only OK on the C4 (maybe 25K on the rear and 35K on the front) but for the price I thought it was fine. I have heard some folks get 40K out of them; perhaps they are a bit more gentle on the tires...

You can always go with the F1's in a non run flat for half the price of EMT version that is on your car.

I just bought a set of Firestone Wide Ovals, along with C6 Z06 deep-dish wheels. All I can say is WOW. I just thought I enjoyed driving my AE before I move to these tires. Handling, ride, quietness............WOW

This is my first time asking a question on the forum and the response has been awesome. My thanks to everyone.

Tough choices: lol

Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus (non-EMT) $1057
Goodyear Eagle F1 A/S (non-EMT) $978
Kuhmo Ecsta ASX $888

But what a great thing for which to have tough choices.

Thanks again to everyone.

I too am looking to replace tires this spring, I have been watching the posts here. I have been tossing around the idea of non runflats. I think however from what I have read the Mich. pilot sports have had a lot of good comments for RFT's. too many choices.......

Agreed--to many choices. Lol. I've also heard some pretty good comments about the Michelin Zero Pressure run flats. Across the board, everyone who has switched from run flats to non-run flats says the more rigid walls of the run flats makes them noisier no matter how good the tire (some make more or less noise than others). Ultimately, I'm after a good blend of performance, grip and tread wear. If you saw the prices I've listed above, I've actually found some a little better.

I'm still thinking about going with non-run flats. But I'll probably go with the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus. For less than $160 more for a set of four, they will likely give me another 10,000 to 15,000 miles more on the tread wear.

Best of luck.

Yep, about 5 1/2 hours from you. My daughter is down at ECU so we come down every so often. Well, she came in last night on her spring break for a week.

Goodyear F1 AS tires are good non-runflat all season tires.

As a postscript, did you know that Goodyear OEM Runflats get 3 mpg better mileage than non-runflats. They get better mpg than other runflats also. I know they are expensive, but if you factor in gas savings, they become in-line with other tires. Plus they can go 50 miles on a flat and be fixed (200 miles in a pinch).
