Well, this is hard to share but, here it goes. I finally missed my first 2nd to 3rd shift last night goofing around at about 5000 rpm. I was promptly greeted with a relatively loud grinding noise. I think I gave a whole new meaning to “find it or grind it”!
I immediately put the clutch back in, and found the correct gear. Everything seemed OK afterwards. What exactly were the components responsible for that god awful noise? Is there anything in particular I should look for after such a screw up? Thanks and please go easy on me. I’m trying.. .honest..
We've all done this , probably more than once. Here's a bad story relative to the above. I was kind enough to take my neighbor for a ride in my new 02 and share with him the thrill of redline runs in one of the baddest cars ever built. I thought I would be a sport and I let him drive after a while. He missed third and grinded the S..t out of it, not once, but twice. It's time for me to step up to the Ripper or Kirban.
The NOISE.........was you ramming you're shifter into the REVERSE gears.............
Folks say, it's not possible..............say there's a lock out after 3 mph.........I say, that's a CROCK.
Been there done that..............
And it doesn't feel nor sound real good. :cry
I've done the thing more than once!! Last time was racing a Supra. The shifter is the only thing I don't like about the car. Even with a lot of practice it still seems 'notchy' and not smooth like my four speed in my '64'
The handful of C5 6-speeds I've driven have been sort of a let down. I thought that the shifter was lame, and the clutch too soft. The shifter doesn't feel like it's doing anything, too easy to move around. The clutch to me is really hard to "feel" engaging.
Ah, that reminds me why I put a ripper in my last 6 speed. I haven't done in the Z06 yet, but the day I do, it's RIPPER TIME again!!!
Normally it happens only at the most inopportune time, such as when showing someone else how great the car is or when you need to blast by someone. The same is true with CAGS which would always get me on a hill/bend.
Got a ripper and it totally eliminated this problem. I don't think about 2-3 anymore. Plus I shift a lot smoother. Worth the extra shift effort.
DITTO. Missed a 2-3 shift at the world class Route 66 Dragway in Joliet, IL with hundreds of people watching. Since installing the Ripper, have never missed 2-3 again.
I let the clutch out before it was completely in third gear. The funny thing about the entire situation is that I never even though about the 2nd to 3rd shift until I read some other posts with people sharing the same horror story. Talk about a self fulfilling prophecy!!!
