Default coolant temperature

Just got my vette out on a nice sunny 64 degree day after a long winter's nap when all of the sudden I felt cold air blowing out of the vents, a slight smell of coolant and the temperature gauge rising to 194 degrees. I went to the local Chevy dealer and without checking anything they said it was ok; it can run as hot as 235 degrees and still be considered normal. What temp does your Vette run at normally?

Mine runs at 171*, if I idle for an extended time without A/C on it climes to 225* before fan cuts in then drops to 217* where fan cuts out. I have a 160* thermostat.

I wish they made a sticky for this even 230 is not over heating.

The low speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 108°C (226°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 104°C (219°F). The high speed cooling fan is commanded on when the coolant temperature reaches 113°C (235°F). It is turned off if the coolant temperature lowers to 108°C (226°F). When the A/C is on and the coolant temperature reaches 85°C (185°F), the low speed cooling fan will be turned on at vehicle speeds less than 56 kPh (35 mph).

This is right from the tech manual.

See the responses in your other thread on this topic. The temp you are seeing is normal, but you might want to investigate the coolant smell a little more.

Check for leaks around the water pump, and the coolant expansion tank.
You should not smell any coolant when you're driving.

Check infront of the radiator...see if any mice made a nest up in there...

My LT1 Trans Am had the same wild temperature swings that my Vette has. Both of them were bottom suckers so I'm not sure if that's the cause or not. Every other car I've owned always stayed at the same temp once it got to operating temp.

I did vacuum out about a pound of crap that was pulled into my radiator on the Vette which got my running temps cooler at highway speeds (about 180 on a 70 degree day). They say its normal to run up to 240 degrees, but having up to a 60 degree operating temperature swing on an aluminum engine does bother me a bit. At the track the 240 degree temps give me my slowest times by almost a second.

I wonder if having a front grill open to the radiator helps.
Does anyone know what temperature the C6 LS2s and LS3s run?

I get the antifreeze smell briefly every once in awhile. I've never been low on coolant and I know some LS1 water pumps spray a small amount through the weep hole sometimes. I'm not too worried about it at this point.
