Default Sunvisor Vanity Light Wiring

I have a Y2K vert that I am going to install a Homelink opener in. Before I remove the sunvisor, I'd like to get all my ducks in order so I can make the installation quick and neat.

My Homelink has an Orange wire and a Black wire. I hooked the Orange to the positive side of a battery and the Black to the negative side of the battery. I programmed the opener in a matter of minutes since it had power. So Orange (+) and Black (-).

As I look at the Y2K service manual (vol 3, page 8-58) vanity mirror electrical diagram, it says the wires are Orange (+) and Black (-). If I can trust the manual and these colors are correct, I have no problems. But I have seen many conversion pictures on this site and the other DC site as well. The wiring colors I see on the visors are RED and White.

Does anyone know or can tell me what colors the wiring is? If the wires are Red and White, which wire color is the HOT one and/or which color is the ground wire?

I don't have a tester, so in lieu of the trial, error, and fuse blowing I would like to know what anyone else has experienced. I don't think GM would have changed the wiring colors on any of the C5 models, but I could be wrong.

Thanks,
Doug

A simple volt meter or test light will show the power wire, that is how I hot mine after I did the same install you are doing.

As you say the wiring diagram shows orange as hot and obviously black as ground. But you're also correct that when you open up the mirror you'll see red & white. Presumably the hot wire on the circuit going through the vanity mirror bulb has red to one side and white out. Maybe a qualified auto electrician can explain why?

I'd say you're OK if you're hooked up to the orange.

here ya go:

http://www.digitalcorvettes.com/foru...light=homelink

that's what I used to install my homelink in my visor... worked like a champ.

black from your homelink spliced into the red in the visor.
orange from your homelink spliced into the white wire in the visor.

By this diagram the red appears to be the ground and white hot. I will give this a shot. It does look logical.

Thanks all

That's right. It is opposite of what you would think.

You can also hit the button to make sure it works right before you pop the visor back in.

I believe white is positive, red ground, but please check. I put mine together using the above provided diagram (car was in storage 1500 miles away so I couldn't verify) Yep it was wired backassward and didn't work. Fortunately, the sewing only cost $4.00 (each time). Still a great DIY mod.

Nothing like trying a test light to be positive?

As they say in the South, "you all ain't gonna believe this s**t!

I installed my Homelink as per photos and as per above.

When I hooked up the wires according to all of the pictures (link) and the way it is described it, the Homelink DID NOT work!

I pulled the connector down from the visor hole and saw an orange wire and a black wire as described in the manual. The visor vanity side of the plug was wired with red and white wires. When I lined up the plug connections, I saw the orange wire (hot) from the harness connected to the red side of the visor vanity plug. I hooked the orange Homelink wire to the red visor wire and the black Homelink wire to the white visor wire. ALL WORKED including the vanity lights!

Operation a success, but I can see how this could get confusing if you are 'winging' it. Bottom line in this lesson is the car harness wiring to the vanity visor plug is Orange (+) and Black (-). Not all Homelinks are wire colored the same. I didn't work for me until I reversed the wires. I even took the Homelink and double checked it's operation by hooking it directly to the battery and it function the door opener. Now I can't understand why you all have a different connection in your visors making your Homelink operational.

Tomorrow I'll get the visor sewed up and back in the car.

Thanks again to all!

I posted on another topic about this a long time ago what wire was hot on the homelink, I took it apart to see what one was.

P.S. A homelink will not operate hooked up to a battery charger, it must be a battery to power it. I have tried it and I know this wont work.
