Was about to head out too good ol' Etown for the Corvette challenge and ran into a 71' or so Vette at AutoZone. He got into as he was leaving, I followed suite, car dry hopped and BANG!!!! Rev limiter...pulled over and seen the puddle of gear fluid and looked behind me and seen the trail.
So...excuse me as I am having a poor me moment. I hate when I break her, and know she won't be there when I am having a bad day to beat up on my way home.
But, good things come out of bad and this has just motivated me to get my motor done! So, I can do everything at once. The motor has been burning a quart every 1k so it's a little beat up. I will be having Tommy from Anger Management turning the wrenches and Troy making her driver friendly..
It will be a stock bottom end, can't decide between the 5.3 heads I already did or do a set of LS6's, which is basically a decision of compression or airflow. Just picked up a nasty cam with unspecified specs. Fast 90 also ported by myself and maybe a DTE with 3.90's is in the future.
man...I hope the case is not broken! I am gonna put it in the air tomorrow and look.
and the cam is not unknown, just unspecified. Meaning I am not willing to give out the specs, I had it cam doctored so I know. Bought it second hand, and it went well into the 10's on the car it was in.

From your description, more than likely, you cracked your diff case, and sheared your transmission output shaft.
A Diff Brace will help prevent this from happening again.

I always laugh when someone says something like this..... But, really, I hate to hear about your diff breakage! I would invest in a diff brace, as stated above! Good Luck!

Just had this happen to me at the track the other night. Sounds IDENTICAL to what I did. I surprisingly think the gears exploded, breaking the case. Not sure about the output shaft in the trans, but it is being replaced as well because second gear is shot. Give RPM a call, they will help you out. IPS motorsports actually is running a special on their rears, so you might wanna give them a shout first.
If you are going to stay factory casted heads then I would suggest a set of hogged out and milled LS6 heads. Thats what I did (Cartek setup) and WOW! My car really moves out. I had a lot of other work done also though. Sorry to hear about the bad news but it looks as though you are making the best of it.

Because the cam spec is some big secret and you don't want everybody getting the magic bump stick?
no updates..been busy at the shop. Going to trailer it over to Tommy at Anger Management on Sunday to figure it out. Everyone seems to agree it's a cracked case. It's been wheel hopping for some time now, and I knew it was a matter of time...should have listened to myself.
Plans are to order some parts next week, for sure Anger Management is going to be rebuilding the rear, 4.10 gear, upgraded clutches and possibly a Driveshaft shop output shaft on both sides. Just get it ready for the new motor since it's not ready just yet.
Thanks for the compliments on the car, it's got the rare 10.5 thin spokes on her powder coated..I searched forever on here for them!
As far as the cam...I understand how people would decipher that as being BS. But those must understand that is one of the most highly guarded secrets in this industry. Valve jobs are the same way, a head porter is very unlikely to tell you the angles and widths. I know the cam is in the 240 duration side. I haven't found out yet. I bought the cam and having it cam doctored. I plan on this thing running some numbers and it cam out of one of the fastest LS's in the country...so doubtful it will ever leak out what it is, BIG would be my answer!lol
I'll keep ya'll posted. I am leaning towards the LS6 head but as I said it sucks because I already have the 5.3 heads done. I am going to flow them next week and make a decision from there.
Cracked diff case? Sounds like a hell of design flaw!
They make a diff brace for this? I don't know what bothers me more, the fact that the diff case can break just for stepping on it or the fact that it happens so much they sell a diff brace for it.
I've had my car for over a year now and its seen a few track days. I'd hate to start packing a spare diff around just in case it breaks. Seems like the drivetrain should be a little more bulletproof than this.
