I just bought a 2003 with 40,100 on the clock. I did not notice it when I test drove it. But, on the way home I noticed the front right speaker does not work. Also, the ashtray is missing and it appears to have been tampered with.
My guess is they had a aftermarket stereo in it and pulled it out and put the stock unit in before they traded in into the Dealer and maybe failed to make a good ground on the front right speaker?
Any idea's on my theory or what could be wrong with the speaker?
It's BOSE...get new speakers & aftermarket head unit.
.
Also check again, that ashtray is there...it's hard to see with the flipped up lid.
.
I should know....I got 2 of em, now.

When you flip up the lid, it is gone, nothing...It should be about the same shape as my 98 vert, this one was pocketed while it was on the showroom floor of a Toyota Dealer. I did not notice, as I became emotionly involved with taking it home. I would not have let an ashtray or speaker not working stop me from getting this '03 with Brand NEW GY runflats all the way around for what they sold it for.
Go back to the dealer and have him get you the ashtray and a new speaker. The speaker is probably blown. Those Bose speakers are pretty expensive and sound like crap compared to just about any other after market speakers.
Door panel pops off pretty easy, wires connecting to the speaker might be off. Cant remember back far enough to recall the stock stereo setup but when I switched my speakers and radio I left the bose harness in place so I can switch back eventually. Maybe the previous owner didnt hook things back up properly.
Should all be fixed by the dealer though, if not and the speaker is blown send me a PM and Ill sell you one for cheap.
If the ashtray is missing I'd bet there was an after-market system with maybe a satellite radio so I'd start at the head unit and check the connections there. You'll probably find its spliced back in and you have a bad splice. The wiring for the right speaker is gray - front positive and gray/black - front negative.
Next I'd check for chafing in the rubber accordian in the door.
Finally I'd pull the door panel and check at the speaker. Chances are they stuck with the BOSE so thats not been disturbed.
This may help. If you need another diagram just shout

Hope you fix it and congrats on the new 03
Thanks for such a complete response! This should be a sticky or at least a great item to be searched.
