Default Bad shop experience

Well I had an oil leak on the front of my car and took it to a local shop to repair. The timing chain cover and the front crank seal were leaking as well as the valve covers. I went ahead and got all of these leaks fixed and when I got the car back it has what sounds like a lifter knocking. I checked the oil and the shop had overfilled the oil by almost a quart. I had the shop come get the car and see what the new problem was and they began to tell me the car had lots of miles (which it does) and they didn't do anything wrong to make the lifters knock. They actually measured the oil and it was 26 ounces over full. Does anyone have any experience with what overfilling an LS1 by 3/4 of a quart will do to the engine?

Thanks
Rick

Rick,

A lot of guys that run HPDE's run an extra quart of oil. I don't think you've anything to worry about as far as that is concerned.

Any change in the oil pressure since they did the work? What oil did they use?

I put 7 quarts in mine sounds like it's a different issue. 3/4 of a quart is not going to hurt anything.

The shop put the same oil in that I use Mobil 1 5w 30. I bought the car about 3 mos ago and it had been neglected. I'm thinking maybe it's not used to having clean oil and it's going in to shock. The oil has been changed twice within the last 5k miles. It actually seems to have better oil pressure now. It keeps a steady 40 and goes up to 60 when cold. It will drop down around 20 at idle when warmed up. It doesn't seem to knock when it's cold or when the oil pressure is above 40. If I drive it a while and get everything good and hot then the knock shows up. Sounds a little like a colapsed lifter. The know does seem to be in the upper part of the engine. With the amount of miles on the car, I may need to just go to a heavier oil and see if that helps until I do the engine swap this fall.
Thanks
Rick

Rick

Our C5s have a couple very common valve train issues that can cause this issue.

One is a bad rocker arm. The roller bearings can fall out and cause rocker noise.

The push rods can bend if the car was ever over revved.

Lifters do go bad as does the lifter trays on early cars.

So,,,,,before you blame the shop,,check those things out and see if they may be contributing to the noise. You can use a mechanics stethoscope to zero in on the location of the noise and make the diagnosis easier.

Your owners manual actually recommends adding an extra quart...

Peace
