I have never owned a 60's vette, just dreamed, but I do have a comparsion.
I am the only owner of my 68 Camaro 327, 4 sp, and I owned a 97 Z-28 6 sp. The 68 is hard riding, hard to steer (no power steering), hard to stop(no power disk brakes), poor gas milage, no AC, etc. The 97 Z was easy to drive, cool, great milage 30 mpg on highway, etc.
The Z was quicker, but more people looked, followed me, and asked questions when I am in the 68 than ever in the 97 Z.
So I do understand your comments about the vettes.
My Big Block Shark is the reason I was able to add a C5 to the stable. I love my shark, and can see no reason that I will ever get rid of it. But a trip to the Bowling Green a year and a half ago in the shark made my wife say "I want AC if we do this again"!!! Now I enjoy the best of both worlds!! The Shark is now the play toy,,I drive the FRC EVERYWHERE,,all the time!! I wouldn't trade either one of them!!
Hoping to get the '72 out soon, I love driving that car. It's not as comfortable, fast, smooth riding, etc as our 2004 ....... I appreciate all the "thumbs up", from young and old, as we drive down the roads in it though
